Babysitting Four Great Grandchildren

Friday, May 16

One of the first things Renee, Garth, Natalie, and Jasmine did when they arrived (8:45 am) was climb unto our kitchen windowsill to watch birds. Jasmine (right) had the bird book and told the others what kind of birds they are seeing.

One bird they like is the male, red-bellied woodpecker.

Their older brother Anthony was on his birthday gift fieldtrip with Grandma Zuck. She is his homeschool science teacher and since he likes to find “monkey gold” she took him to a location where there was supposed to be some. (Monkey gold is not a standard mineral name, but it’s often used by collectors to describe pyrite — also called “fool’s gold”.)

Garth was exhausted from playing and his many excursions around the house and fell asleep on the floor in the children’s room while his sisters watched Bubble Guppies. He usually fights sleep, so I was surprised to see him sleeping when I walked into their room to gather lunch dishes.

When Abby got back at noon and saw this, she went to their van to get her cell phone for a picture. She was just as surprised as me to find out he fell asleep on the floor.

I told her about the few minutes earlier in the morning when I could not find Garth. I checked every room, the garage, and outside, then repeated looking into each room a bit more carefully. I even checked the yard and road again. About the time I was feeling a bit panicky, I found him on my La-Z-Boy in the living room having a great time with my remote control – causing all kinds of things to happen on our TV. 🙂

After she left, we prepared to leave for Cerwin’s final eye checkup following cataract surgery. Dr. Tien was very pleased and said, “I will see you in a year.”

Before leaving Manning, Rommel & Thode Associates, we went to the area where he could order a new prescription for his glasses which is needed after cataract surgery. He has been using reading glasses for reading but didn’t need glasses for distance viewing. He will be glad to have glasses on his face rather than having to carry glasses in his pocket for when he needed to read.
