Several days ago, our friend Sam Rittenhouse asked if we wanted to go along with him to visit our friend Les Habbershon. We were incredibly pleased to go along to the Veterans Center where he lives. The last time we saw him was when he lived in a Senior Living Center in our area.

I enjoyed watching these three visit and reminisce about many years ago (in the ’90s) with Transport for Christ when Les was in charge of chapel construction. During that time Cerwin helped Les on Saturdays or days when he was not hauling propane and Les and Sam delivered the chapels.
They laughed about experiences – especially the time when Les and Sam were delivering a chapel to a truck stop and Les turned on the truck while Sam was still outside and soot from the truck’s stack came down all over Sam. 🙂 After that Les called him “Sooty Sam”.

Sam does a great job of staying in touch with former and current members of TFC and TFCGlobal – especially on their birthdays and wedding anniversaries. However, after Les no longer had a cell phone, Sam lost touch with him for a few years. One day last year he decided to stop at this location and discovered that he was still alive and well.

Les has a bit of dementia but easily remembered our names and most of the stories they shared. A few times he asked about the same story two or three times. He thanked us several times for coming to visit him.
We visited about an hour, and as we left in Sam’s pickup truck, Sam said, “I am sure we blessed Les, but I think we may have been the more blessed.” We agreed.
We stopped at Yoder’s in New Holland for lunch.
It was so good to read this – brought back so many memories! He looks pretty good for his age!
(the above was from Inge)
He does look good. The nursing staff said he always thanks them when they push his wheelchair somewhere or help him with anything.
It’s always rewading tocatch up with friends you thought you’ve lost track of!
