Two-Day Road Trip to Elk County – Part 1

Wednesday, October 7

The leaves in our area were just starting to change colors when we left home on the 7th.

I was happy that Cerwin wanted to do a side trip to Belleville along the way because I knew we would see a variety of Amish buggies. There are not white buggies in our area.

While waiting to pass another buggy there was a big rig behind us.

Since our son Jere is now working in the corporate office of Paul B. Zimmerman, Inc, Lititz, Cerwin wanted to see their store in Belleville. https://www.pbzinc.com/companies/wholesale.php

We were impressed with the friendly, helpful staff – just like those at the headquarters in Lititz.

Cerwin has been doing business with PaulB’s for many years – at the Lititz hardware store and the fabricating shop – personally and for TFC (when building chapels). Since Jere now gets into all their stores and shops, several of the Zimmerman’s or an employee thought Jere looks like Cerwin’s brother – or if they haven’t seen Cerwin for awhile, thought he was Cerwin. 🙂 Cerwin and Jere are enjoying that comparison.

I tell Cerwin if we drove a horse and buggy, the horse would turn in to PaulB Hardware every time we drove by.

Maybe that is what happened with this horse and buggy which were parked in front of the store. 🙂

When searching the Internet for PaulB’s address in Belleville, just before leaving on this trip, Cerwin noticed this shop not far from the hardware store and thought it looked like a good place to have a morning donut. It was a great choice.

I sweet-talked Cerwin into going several miles further on this road so we could see more of Belleville Amish and Mennonite country.

Belleville is a census-designated place in the Kishacoquillas Valley of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Much of the population is Amish or Mennonite.

It is an incredibly beautiful area.

I was surprised to discover I actually captured a few corn shocks in this field as they were at a hillside and we only saw them for a very short time. (Cerwin doesn’t like to stop very often, so I have to capture pictures when we are moving.) 🙂

Wash day in the countryside.

Not all the buggies in this area have lights on them – which I think is dangerous – so I was glad to see that most of the black buggies have lights. We saw only one yellow buggy, but I was not able to capture a picture.

Cerwin said it looks like he is hauling chickens.

I looked closer and said, “You are right. I see some white and black heads in the crates.”

I think this man was taking a nap. I snapped several pictures of this buggy and he didn’t change positions.

Do you notice anything unusual on this buggy? It has lanterns instead of lights.

There was more color in the trees as we approached Elk County.

I will post more of our road trip – Day 1 – in my next post.

Elk County is in northwestern Pennsylvania – about 3 1/2 hours from our place.
