Rye Harvest on the Homestead

Wednesday, April 29

I heard the sound of machinery and noticed that the rye harvest was beginning.

An empty truck coming to replace the full one.

The rye had been cut a few days earlier during a time of cool weather and poor drying, so the rye had been spread out to dry and our nephew Larry (Homestead owner) was raking it into windrows.

This was a cool, breezy day – good for drying the rye – before a predicted storm the next day.

I took this picture just after Larry noticed me at the dining room window – and waved. πŸ™‚ I wish I had caught that.

Larry had to keep moving to stay ahead of the harvest crew.

A full truck leaving and an emptying starting.

Notice the tractor in the background (center-left) driving on the rye in the trench to pack it down.

I was glad to see them finish the job – in these two fields and two others on the other side of the barn – because of the rain that was supposed to be coming the next day. Notice the other field in the left background.
