Cousin’s Week ~ Thursday

Thursday, August 21 ~ A Day At Home

01-DSC_7919The children loved any opportunity I gave them to play computer games.

03-DSC_7921On the mornings that we weren’t leaving the house early, we used Keys for Kids Ministries for devotions.

04-DSC_7922It was fun for each one to download it on their computer, then take turns reading the devotional and scripture for the day.

05-DSC_7924After I started a load of laundry and got the house in reasonable order, we began a series of experiments from the science kits. In this photo Gloria is grinding oatmeal.

08-DSC_7930After she shaped the oatmeal soap into half a dozen balls, they proceeded to experiment with cupcakes.

09-DSC_7932Jared’s experiment was to see what happens when baking soda and vinegar is added to half the batch, but not to the other half of the batch.

It was a rather blah recipe, so we didn’t like either cupcake – even though one raised and the other didn’t. 🙂 I was glad that a batch only made a few small cupcakes.

10-DSC_7933Jesse’s experiment was to make sugar cookies, divide the batch in half, then add food coloring to bowl A but not to bowl B.

11-DSC_7937The kit included a rather strange food coloring that didn’t blend into the dough very well. It ended up being kind of speckled.

12-DSC_7938Jesse loved that the kit recommended using the test tube as a cookie cutter – making cute, little cookies.

13-DSC_7939The test was to give one of each to a friend and ask them which one was best.

Of course the white ones and the blue ones tasted the same – because the ingredients were the same. They were quite good, so we saved them for Friday night so he could serve them at our farewell supper.

14-DSC_7941Ian decided to make another bath item. This one used oatmeal and dried rose petals.

15-DSC_7943We decided that we were going to have a spa for the parents and cousins who could come the next night for the hot dog roast. 🙂

16-DSC_7944After cleaning up from the experiments, I got out the blank cards, pens, and stickers so they could make birthday or praying-for-you cards. I even resurrected Diana and Jana from the man cave where they were enjoying the luxury of hanging out and watching a movie – doing as little as possible. 🙂 Jana does not work on Thursdays and Diana did not have to go to work until the late afternoon.

17-DSC_7946Since Aunt Deb’s birthday was coming up, a few made cards were for her.

18-DSC_7947Dee, Shake, and Cody were the recipients of most of them. They are friends of Roy and Deb, and have consequently become friends of our family. Cody (Shake & Dee’s 21-year-old son) was in an awful car accident about seven weeks ago and is still recuperating at Hershey Medical. When he is well enough to leave the hospital, he will most likely have to spend many months in a rehab center.

Join us in praying for wisdom for the doctors and nurses, strength for Shake and Dee, and healing for Cody.

21-DSC_7951During the afternoon I had a surprise visit from Kristen who was bearing 22 pint of canned applesauce and…

22-DSC_7953…30 packs of fresh corn that she and Jere had just processed for our freezer.

We are so blessed.

We had a fairly relaxing evening.
