A Funny Alarm Clock Story

We have a small TV in our bedroom that is not hooked up to cable or satellite, so when I go to bed early (as happens frequently) I have a choice of four channels. Three, really because I do not use the Shopping Channel.

My favorite choice is often the Andy Griffith Show, because it is relaxing – and because I know most of the episodes, it puts me to sleep. 🙂

On this particular night – about a week ago – I was watching and laughing along with one of my favorite shows – when Gomer Pyle is fired from his job at the gas station. Because he lived there, he had to look for a new place to stay. He asked Sherrif Andy if he could sleep in one of the jail cells until he found a job and got on his feet again.

Andy insisted that he come to his house and stay with him, his son Opie and Aunt Bee.

That’s when the fun begins because the Taylor household goes to bed early, but not Gomer. He is used to going to bed quite late.

First, he disturbed Andy by trimming a tree with a loud chainsaw. Andy yells out the window, “Go to bed Gomer, it’s 11:00 at night.” Gomer replied, “Oh, am I bothering you?”

Andy goes back to bed, falls asleep and is awakened again when Gomer decides to fix the electric sweeper. Again, Andy gets out of bed and yells down the stairs, “Gomer go to bed. Fix that tomorrow.” Gomer replied, “Oh, am I bothering you?”

Andy goes back to bed and Gomer finally decides to go to bed, but first he has to brush his teeth, gargle and sing – quite loudly. Andy just rolls over and groans. 🙂

The next evening there are similar loud events, including many Mayberry residents yelling for Gomer to come to the window to hear about their car troubles.

When the program ended, I turned the TV off, rolled over to go to sleep – smiling – and just as I was entering the twilight zone, a loud crash awakened me!

When Cerwin was getting into bed, he bumped his alarm clock off the old, painted, milk can on which it sits. I think it hit the milk can a time or two as it clanged its way to the floor.

I almost laughed out loud. I thought Gomer Pyle had moved into our house. 🙂
