Household Items That Talk to Us

I still smile when I think about the smoke alarm talking to us when Bunny and Peg were here the other week. I had just checked on supper, which was in the oven, and had joined Cerwin, Bunny, and Peg in the living room while we waited for Sam and Inge to arrive. Within a short time, our smoke alarm said, very loudly, “Evacuate immediately!”

I was kind of puzzled, because nothing was close to overflowing in the oven. However, the kitchen was filled with smoke. When I opened the oven, there was a smoldering hot pad which had fallen into the oven without my notice. I quickly threw the hot pad out the sink window, which I had opened to let the smoke out.

Cerwin got the smoke alarm in the hallway and took it outside, however there was still a smoke alarm yelling at me, “Evacuate immediately.” I didn’t remember there was also a smoke alarm on the kitchen shelf. So, I got it and took it outside as it continued to shriek at me.

After we quietened the smoke alarms, and the smoke was going out the windows and doors, our kitchen phone started talking, “Low battery. Low battery.” 🙂

Though it was amusing, I am thankful the hot pad did not catch on fire due to the warning, and we were informed to put the phone on its charger before the battery died.

Oh, the joys of modern conveniences.
