Bistro Barberet & Bakery with Roy and Deb

Saturday Evening, July 11

This meal was our gift to Roy and Deb for his summer birthday – and was the first time Cerwin and I were inside a restaurant since COVID-19 restrictions began in March.

Roy loves to try new places – which means none of us were here before.

It almost felt like we were on vacation, because the restaurant is French and in downtown Lancaster. We drive through Lancaster a lot, but almost never stop or eat in the downtown area. We had to figure out how to pay for street parking – which was quite different from anything we had ever done: enter your license plate number then pay for the number of hours you are going to stay.

Deb and Roy arrived almost the same time we did – just a bit early for our reservation appointment.

We had to wear masks when we entered the door until we sat down at our table or if we got up to use the restroom or check on the desserts in the entrance area.

Bread was brought to our table after we ordered our juice and soda.

We ordered Escargot (snail) – in hazelnut-garlic butter. The guys were not impressed. 🙂 Deb and I enjoyed it – especially if they were covered with plenty of the hazelnut-garlic butter dressing.

Deb’s Poulet au jus – roasted chicken breast, mashed potatoes, shallot, thyme and natural jus

Cerwin’s Steak Frites – hanger steak, green peppercorn demi-glace, pommes frites

Roy’s Pan Seared Salmon Nicoise – potato, green bean, olive, tomato, hard boiled egg, romaine, anchovies and balsamic vinaigrette

My Crab Cake le Bec Fin Style – Crab lump, shrimp mousse, fine herbs, tomato butter, frisee salad and shaved fennel

This restaurant features a great bakery with lots of choices in the entrance display area.

Deb’s glazed fruit dessert

Roy’s dessert was ice cream filled.

Deb ordered a “squirrel picnic table” from her dad. He made it with left-over lumber in his shop.

Yes, you read correctly, a squirrel picnic table. Most of us do not encourage squirrels to come to our feeders, but she has a special area on their deck for squirrels. 🙂

I am anxious to learn if the squirrels and birds use it.

These macarons were a gift to Roy for his birthday. Deb bought a box full of these for their house before they brought this bag to the table. Roy gave this bag to us since they had plenty. Thanks, Roy. We certainly enjoyed them.
