Cutting the Rye

Saturday, April 4

When I heard the sound of farm equipment, I went to the window to see what was going on in the field across the road. Our Amish neighbor was cutting his field of grass. Cerwin said it looks like rye. I am not familiar with winter grass covers for the fields, so I will take him at his word.

I think this is my favorite photo from this series of pictures – as the mules came down the road behind our weeping cherry tree – in the woodsy part of our yard.

I checked on the field now and then and soon saw another Amish man driving a tractor and raking the mown grass. You can see that I took some of these pictures from a kitchen window – in between bird feeders and trees.

I took this last picture of the day at 3:30 on Saturday afternoon. They were getting it done!

The next morning, Sunday, arrived warm and beautiful. I couldn’t resist walking across the road (when getting Cerwin’s Sunday paper) and taking in the fabulous scent of freshly cut grass.
