Two Interesting Days with the Birds

Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9

Cerwin received a gift card to Tractor Supply for his birthday, and encouraged me to buy “stuff” for the birds. I liked this feeder that holds round, stacking suet “wheels.”

The top wheel is mealy worms and the bottom one is a variety of bird seed.

It didn’t take long for the birds to find it.

It is good to see Northern Mockingbirds again.

A catbird with a bit of “attitude.”

This gives you a broader view of our bird feeding area – and three male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. Two on the pole and one in the box feeder on the right. The shoes (center front) belonged to my dad and have been in this patio area since he died in 1997.

Female Red-bellied Woodpecker.

I can tell it is female because of her grey cap. The male’s head is read to its beak.

I got a lot of Baltimore Oriole pictures during these two days. I need to take advantage of seeing them while they are here.

The female is waiting for him to leave the feeder. They don’t seem to share well when feeding.

Moving to the other side.

You better wait until I am finished.

Okay, it’s your turn. I am leaving.

I heard a light thud at our kitchen window and noticed a male oriole sitting on the ledge.

I had to stand on my tiptoes to capture this picture, because he was out of my camera range.

When a male cardinal or robin “fights” with his reflection in a window, he is usually mating and claiming its territory, maybe jealous of the bird in the window. I don’t know if that is what was going on with the oriole, because this is the first time I saw this kind of behavior.

He flew at the window about three times when I was watching, then sat on the ledge looking at me.

After getting a few pictures on my tiptoes, I stood in the sink to get better pictures. šŸ™‚ (If I ever break an arm or leg, it will probably be from taking pictures of birds.)

They are so pretty up close.

I took this last picture from the bay window at our kitchen table.
