My Favorite Skunk

I love when I get up early and one of our neighborhood skunks is eating dogfood or old birdseed or suet. If I want these critters to eat old birdseed or suet, I put it in a ground feeder, hoping they will eat that and not mess up any of the newer birdfeed.

Remember when I told you a few weeks ago that our daughter suggested we keep dogfood in a dish so the raccoons won’t mess with our birdfeeders. It is working. I haven’t seen a raccoon yet, but I haven’t seen any messed up birdfeeders or suet since then either. Skunks stay on the ground and aren’t so destructive.

I make sure the dogfood is level in the dish – each night before I go to bed so I can tell is something was eating it during the night. It almost always has a nice indention in the dogfood when I get up.

If you noticed the date and time, you know I have to get up just before 5 am to see one of these. The raccoons must be up after I go to bed or before I get up. 🙂

This picture was taken a few days later at almost the same time. I can’t tell if it is the same skunk because it is facing the other direction to eat from the ground feeder where I had old birdseed and suet.

Skunks are good for yards, because they love digging for grubs. You just want to make sure you don’t make it easy for them to live under your deck or frighten them. I took this last picture by opening our entrance door to the garage. As soon as it heard the door, it’s tail went up in the air.

I didn’t linger. 🙂
