Taking Hans and Anneke to JFK

Monday, April 1

It was a bittersweet day because we had to take Hans and Anneke back to JFK so they could fly home to Belgium.

Interesting that we had never driven to JFK on our own, now one week later we were back and the surroundings in Terminal 1 looked familiar.

The airline asked them to be at the airport three hours early, so we left home in time to get there four hours early – just in case we had any traffic issues in New York City. Everything went well, so we were there four hours early.

There wasn’t much time to take pictures as we had limited time to drop them off and get quick hugs while an airport guard kept his eye on us.

I rarely help Cerwin with directions, but he asked me to keep an eye on the map and his written directions while he kept his eye on the road and the GPS – until we got away from the city.

Heavy traffic always makes me look forward to the very un-busy road at home. I love when my cell phone tells me that traffic is light by our house. It is always light by our house. šŸ™‚

I would have liked to get a picture of the New York City skyline, but every time I could see it we were on a bridge.

About three and a half hours later, I messaged Hans – “Going by Lanita.” Going by Dutch Valley.” He replied, “Sniff, Sniff.” About the same time he messaged me that their flight was delayed due to a technical issue. Then, after several minutes, he said, “Flight canceled until tomorrow evening.”

“Oh, no,” I replied. He said they were going to see if they could find another flight to Belgium. The next message I got from them was the next morning when they were at home – after a long, exhausting trip. They got a flight to London then to Brussels.

Kaat, thank you for organizing this trip for your parents. We had an amazing, fabulous time with them. Maybe sometime we will come to Belgium and meet you too. šŸ™‚
