For some reason her birthday on February 16 always brings memories of her to my attention. I may remember her birthdate because it was only eight days after my birthday.

Most of my memories of her are from after they moved off the farm – to a house that was built on a section of the farm – near Maytown. Seeing her at the kitchen sink brings back memories of family meals or times when our Manheim family visited and she and grandpa served us root beer, pretzels, and chunks of bologna.

Grandpa Victor and Grandma Elizabeth Hawthorne in front of their house following a snowstorm.

I love this photo from our wedding in 1963. I cropped it from a wedding picture that included each of our grandparents.

Grandpa and Grandma Hershey, Grandpa and Grandpa Hawthorne, us, Grandma and Grandpa High, and Grandma and Grandpa Groff. Grandpa Groff was a step-grandpa, but he is the only one we knew, because Grandma Groff’s first husband, Micael Sauder died when Cerwin’s mom was sixteen.

This is a picture that most of the Hawthorne cousins have. It is the last picture I have of the two of them together. Grandpa: Victor Hawthorne was born in 1893 and died in 1968. Grandma Elizabeth Hawthorne was born in 1898 and died in 1969.
My heart smiles when I remember them.
I remember your Grandpa and Grandma Hershey. Enjoyed hearing him preach.
Yes, you would remember him. 🙂
Thank you for posting this. I have so many great memories of all the cousins at their home at holidays and grandpa hand cranking home made vanilla ice cream.
I thought my Hawthorne cousins would enjoy this. 🙂 I forgot about the homemade ice cream.
I’m your reader from the South that grew up in Lebanon. Your grandma on the far left looks almost exactly like my great grandma Longenecker. She passed away in 1980 and she attended Midway Church of the Brethren in Lebanon. She wore the plain clothes like that but she also looks like her a lot in the face. So interesting. Such happy memories I have of her, going to visit her when I was a little girl. She was a quilter and made many quilts.

My Grandma Hershey (left) was a Heagy and has some Lebanon roots. I think Bucher. Maybe she is related to your great grandma. 🙂
Wouldn’t that be something. My great grandmother’s name was Mary (Gibble) Longenecker.
