Corn Fodder Bales

I was expecting something to soon be happening in the field below our yard, because the leftover corn stalks and cobs had been raked into rows.

The weather was not predicted to be very good during the next day or two.

Toward evening (about 5 pm) I heard equipment in the field – turning the corn fodder into bales.

There must have been something going on in our Amish community. We saw several buggies coming and going. We heard rumors that there is a wedding coming up in the near future. Maybe they were helping to get the place ready for the big event.

Seeing this buggy in front of the family’s 200+ year-old house took me back to when there was only the stone part of the house and only horse and buggies on the road. Of course there would not have been an electric pole and wires. 🙂

There’s a funny story in my Grandpa Hershey’s book that tells about a time when he was husking corn by hand and saw the mailman coming in his buggy. He knew about the time the mailman would go back a second time so pre-husked some corn, then stood near a corn shock and made it look like he was husking corn really fast. Before long the news got around the neighborhood that Milt Hershey is really fast at husking corn. 🙂

Back to the activity in the field.

They used a skid loader to load the large bales onto a long trailer.

Taking the loaded trailer to the farm.

I was losing light for the camera, but we heard the equipment into the evening – and the bales were gone by morning. The fields in our valley are soon ready for winter.

If you look across the road, you can see the winter rye is already green. That corn was harvested as silage several weeks ago and put into a trench – then seeded with the rye.
