How Orange Was My Valley

Saturday Evening, November 9

The title of this post is a play on words from the book “How Green Was My Valley”.

I am not sure I ever read the 1939 novel by Richard Llewellyn, or watched the movie based on the book, but I always liked the title. Maybe because I have lived in a valley most of my life.

The story is about a Welsh family and the mining community in which they lived. The author gathered material for the novel from conversations with local mining families in Gilfach Goch.

My valley sees a variety of colors throughout the year – green, blue, grey, yellow, orange – depending on the weather and sky. When the sun goes down, my valley is very dark, even black, but I love that whatever the color, it is usually peaceful. Kind of like my heart when God paints the sky a brilliant orange.
