South Africa – Day 8 – Morning at Camp

Wednesday Morning, March 7

I learned to make French press coffee while in South Africa – because that is what was available in our chalet.

I enjoyed the mornings when the men were out hunting, because that gave me time to relax on our porch – read my devotional book “In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day”, drink coffee, watch for wildlife, and learn more about African wildlife from the books that were in our room.

It looks like I am getting a visitor. Kristen was out walking the fence line and looking for photo opportunities.

It was a beautiful morning in the African bush. The scene from our front porch.

Looking toward our front porch.

After Kristen left, I looked at some of the names on the trees in our area of camp.

There are a variety of cacti in the area.

A pretty little tree

There were fresh foot prints – not sure what they are – maybe monkey.

I “planted” a few marula fruits near our chalet to see if something would come for them. They were usually gone by morning.

Back at the chalet there was a herd of warthogs in front of our porch.

Jared should be here. That is what he is hunting for this morning.

I knew they had spotted me when I was looking at their rear ends and their tails were in the air.

It was time to go to the main house to get some juice and toast – and see what Kristen, Kate, Jana, and Jesse were doing. The breakfast items were at the far end of this dining/living room.

I like this juice cover – used to keep bugs away. Kate told me who made it, but I forget if it was her mother-in-law, or maybe a sister-in-law.

Steffy was marinating Jere and Cerwin’s nyala for an evening meal.

Victor was working in the garden.

By the time I went back to the kitchen, Steffie was washing a few dishes – I think from preparing the nyala.

Kristen and Kate were visiting behind the house – preparing to get the shoes and socks ready for delivery to the care center the next day.

The shoes and socks

Kate, Jana, and Kristen paired the shoes, making sure that there was a left and right foot shoe of the same size.

Kate tied the girls shoes together with white cord while Kristen tied the boys shoes together with the tie on the shoe.

We ended up with an odd pair, so they rechecked every one. They all matched, so apparently one set was not paired correctly from the factory.

The socks

The sorting is finished. We knew what shoes and socks to buy because they wear uniforms to school.

Finally – I was able to get a photo of all three dogs in one place. Jethro on the left, Sally in the middle, and Gus on the right.

Jesse was pleased with his purchase of compacted wash cloths for gifts.

  Pretty underwear for the girls.

Jana bought small bottles of fingernail polish for the girls at the school.

After we finished, I walked around the back of the house and noticed something that I had not seen before – outside Phi and Kate’s bedroom area.

It is an outside shower. She said they rarely use it.

Behind that part of the house there is an area where they start new trees and have a few garden items.

It was refreshing to check out the new growth.

About this time we learned that Jared had mortally wounded a warthog, but it had run into the brush. The men were coming in for some breakfast sandwiches before going out to look for it.
