Hairy Woodpecker
It is nice to see a Hairy Woodpecker now and then. We see Downy Woodpeckers almost every day this time of year, but it is a bit rare to see the larger Hairy – even though they look alike.
Rest in the Lord and be willing to wait for Him. Psalm 37:7 (NLV)

~~~ Thursday, November 25 ~~~ We woke up to a frosty, cold, beautiful morning – making it feel like a Thanksgiving Day. We talked about the beauty and frost as we went to Thanksgiving Day service at church. Our Thanksgiving Day service is a highlight of our church’s year because it’s a morning when our […]
~~~ Wednesday, November 23 ~~~ One of the first things I usually do when we arrive at Sam Rittenhouse’s house is to see what is going on in his orchard and yard. Our purpose for going was for Cerwin to help Sam with the small propane heater he uses to keep his greenhouse warm during […]
~~~ Tuesday Evening, November 23 ~~~ We had a great evening catching up on each other’s lives. When it was getting close to closing time we asked a restaurant worker, “At what point will we realize that it is time for us to leave?” She said, “When I hand you the sweeper and ask you […]
~~~ Tuesday, November 23 ~~~ I was outside taking a picture of the morning moon when I heard the clip clop of horse’s hooves and thought – this must be the day of the Amish wedding. (Remember yesterday’s post when I thought there might be a wedding in the neighborhood because the Amish church wagon […]
~~~ Monday, November 22 ~~~ When I saw an Amish church wagon go by our house early Monday morning, I figured there will be another wedding later this week or an Amish family in the neighborhood will be hosting their church service on Sunday. The wagon holds benches and other items (song books) that are […]
~~~ Saturday Morning, November 20 ~~~ We were up early to be at Yoder’s Restaurant by 7:15 – for the 7:30 prayer breakfast. The morning sky was beautiful. One thing I enjoy about late fall and winter is leafless tree silhouettes. The sun was low and in our faces – making it difficult to drive. […]
~~~ Friday Morning, November 19 ~~~ I woke up early – forgetting that there was an eclipse. As soon as I opened Facebook, I saw a few comments about it, quickly grabbed my camera and went outside. Because of my camera setting, my first two shots (taken just after 4:30 am) did not show the […]
~~~ Thursday Afternoon, November 18 ~~~ Cerwin is appreciating the nut picker upper we purchased last year. We have a few acorns, but mostly shellbark and hickory nuts. He said it’s much better than raking them – and putting them into a wheelbarrow.
Common Grackles have intense eyes. He doesn’t look very happy. I am going to call this one a he because its tail is pretty long. Females have shorter tails. Sometimes I wonder what is behind those eyes. What are they thinking?
~~~ November 18 ~~~ I love the pastel colors of a foggy morning. Our two hickory trees tower over the small red maple. I knew the fog would soon be lifting when I looked straight up to a blue sky. I was outside when I heard the clip clop of horse’s hooves. I wasn’t surprised, […]
It’s time for Cerwin to put his trusty redneck leaf catcher to work. I post this every year because I am so proud of his creativity in building it on an old trailer, then figuring out the hose combination. If I was responsible for picking up leaves, I would have to hire someone – or […]
~~~ Sunday, November 14 ~~~ I think my great great grandpa Hershey and our family members who lived on the homestead after him (where I grew up) would enjoy watching the Amish buggies traveling over the roads of our valley as much as I do. We live deep in the country and most Amish in […]
~~~ Saturday, November 13 ~~~ Notice the Hickory Nuts?
