On the Road to Chilliwack, BC

Day 5 – Saturday

Mitchell, SD, to Livingston, MT

Since we were on the road early, we drove out of the snow before daylight.  I took 412 pictures today, but reduced that number to twenty-two for my blog.

This is what was making the reflection in my rearview mirror.

8-12 (2).JPG

It appeared this driver fell asleep and was waiting for a tow truck.  I would guess that he is awake now!

We went across a corner of Wyoming (twenty-four miles).

8-12 (9).JPG

We saw dozens of herds of antelope…

8-12 (10).JPG

8-12 (11).JPG

…also large herds of domesticated sheep.

8-12 (12).JPG

Montana provided a huge variety of scenery.

Cattle were also a common sight today.

8-12 (20).JPG

This is the view from our cab as the sun set tonight.  We are parked in a small truck stop in Livingston, Montana, about an hour north of Yellowstone National Park.

8-12 (21).JPG

How is this for a parking spot for the night?

~~~
It was sixty-one degrees when we stopped here for supper, but the temperature has dropped to thirty-nine as I post this at 9:12 p.m. Mountain Time.  I am ready to crawl into my sleeping bag.
Goodnight!
On the Road to Chilliwack, BC
Day 4 – Friday
Snowbound in Mitchell, SD
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD
After Cerwin woke up and turned on the CB, we heard horror stories concerning the Interstate – using words that I will not repeat.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (1)
In the truck stop several drivers with loaded trucks told about the wind blowing them into the next lane.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (2)
We heard about four-wheeler accidents and jackknifed trucks.  A truck drove by us that had obviously jackknifed.  I was so surprised that she was still able to drive the truck that I forgot to take a picture.
~~~

Cerwin decided that we weren’t going anywhere today.  If the wind moved a loaded truck, we would be in real trouble.  It was rocking the truck, and we were parked in a line of other trucks.

4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (3)

One of the best things I bought for this trip was this lighted mirror.  The cab is not well-lighted where the other mirror is located.

After getting dressed for the day, we enjoyed coffee from our thermos – filled the night before – and watched trucks and people.

4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (4)

By late afternoon the snow was beginning to melt, and we had seen every color and style rig.

I asked the girls at the fuel desk, how many trucks get fuel here in one day.  She said about 119 get diesel for their rig, and the same number get fuel for their refers (refrigerated trailers).  She thought they sell fifteen to twenty thousand gallons of diesel a day.

4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (29)

This is a refer – meaning his load probably needed to be refrigerated.

The lot holds 100+ rigs, and was full last night – until noon when some began braving the Interstate.  Many parked at Cabela’s across the street – according to the CB.

4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (5)

Almost every truck we saw today had a sleeper.  Most were this size, a few were a bit smaller.  We saw only three day-cabs (without a sleeper).

4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (6)

Then this one came in!  Cerwin said, “Look at that wheelbase.”  We talked to the drivers in the restaurant at lunch time.  There is even a washer and dryer in this rig.  They are a husband/wife team (both drive) from Florida, and are on the road three months at a time.

~~~
The loads varied even more than the cabs – reminding me of the quote, “If you wear it, walk on it, sleep on it, drive it, eat it, or use it – a truck probably brought it.”
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (8)
Cattle truck (or “bull wagon” as the truckers call them)
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (9)
Specialty loads.  (This equipment is on three trailers.)
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (10)
Cars
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (11)
We saw lots of farm equipment – especially John Deere.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (12)
There was other equipment as well
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (13)
Cerwin said this trailer was probably used for moving an entire household.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (14)
Dry bulk hauler
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (15)
Large things covered with tarps
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (16)
Milk
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (17)
Pipes
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (18)
Furniture
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (19)
Sraw
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (20)
Lots of oversized loads with strange and unusual equipment.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (21)
Oops!  Someone locked their door with the keys inside and had to call the locksmith.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (22)
It looks like they still us a trusty coat hanger or long wire – notice the green arrow at the upper left.  It took him less than a minute to open it!
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (23)
The garage was to our left, and on a day like this we saw the tow truck go by many times.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (24)
Then there were things installed or lettered on the trucks – like this Bible verse.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (25)
I expect the picture was a memorial to this little person.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (26)
A cute hood ornament.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (27)
Animal guards in front of the bumper are more common in this part of the country than in the east coast.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (28)
Lots of truckers have pets with them, but this cat is the only one we saw in a truck.  We did see a driver walking his dog earlier in the day.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (30)
We used some of the time to let our children know that we are okay.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (31)
After sitting most of the day, and eating breakfast and lunch in the truck stop restaurant, I told Cerwin that all I needed for supper was water!
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (32)
He did talk me into sharing a taco salad.  He also had a slice of pecan pie.
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (33)
Photographers are always looking for something to take pictures of – even when spending most of the day in the cab of a truck!
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (34)
4-11-08 Mitchell, SD (35)
Just before dark, after I thought I had taken every picture I could – from my seat in the truck – this rig pulled into the fuel island.
I told Cerwin, “Look at that load.  Someone must raise really large birds to lay eggs that size!”
~~~

So went our day.  It was interesting, relaxing, and fun.

We expect to pull out shortly after 4:00 in the morning.

On the Road to Chilliwack, BC

Day 3  – Thursday

Omaha, NE, to Mitchell, SD

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell.JPG

 We awoke to the smell of frying bacon.

 We got to the chapel about 9:00 a.m. and met Wayne, the chaplain on duty for the day.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (4).JPG

 Cerwin pulled the chapel out of its spot and headed to the fuel island on a rainy, windy, cold morning.

How would you like to pay $543.65 when filling up your vehicle?  He needed 136 gallon of diesel, then asked me to do the math – it equaled 6.45 mile per gallon.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (5).JPG

On the road again – 9:40 a.m.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (7).JPG

We crossed the Iowa line at 10:08 a.m.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (8).JPG

 By 11:40 we were in South Dakota, where the temperature dropped to thirty-three degrees, and the wind and rain challenged our almost empty trailer.  Cerwin kept a tight grip on the steering wheel.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (9).JPG

 Only sixteen more miles to our destination – the Pilot Truck Stop in Sioux Falls.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (10).JPG

 1:30 p.m. we saw the Pilot sign and scanned the parking lot for the TFC chapel.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (11).JPG

 We quickly spotted it as we approached the entrance that Chaplain Rallyn told us to enter.  It is always fun to see two chapels side-by-side for awhile.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (12).JPG

While waiing for our food to arrive, Cerwin asked Rallyn about a few truck stops to the west on I-90, as a snow storm is predicted in the next few hours.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (13).JPG

 We enjoyed a delicious lunch and fellowship with Rallyn and Carolyn Van Beek, however, we didn’t linger because of the approaching storm.  It was decided that the farther west we could travel, the better, because the storm was hitting Sioux Falls and east.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (14).JPG

We did take time to visit the chapel and listen to a song from Carolyn, played on the organ recently donated to the chapel.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (15).JPG

 Rallyn pointed out pictures of his good supply of volunteer chaplains.  This chapel probably has more volunteers than any other in the ministry.  (Rose Gehman, notice the box of New Testaments on the bottom right.  We delivered them safely!)

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (17).JPG

 This is where the volunteers store their on-duty name tags.

Their cozy living quarters.

 Carolyn waving goodbye and Rallyn taking a picture.  The rain changed to sleet and snow by the time we left.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (19).JPG

We hadn’t gone many miles until the snow started, making the road a bit treacherous.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (20).JPG

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (22).JPG

After seeing two accidents, Cerwin decided that the Pilot at Mitchell was going to be our stopping place.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (23).JPG

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (24).JPG

 The brown spot in the field is a jack rabbit – running at full-tilt.  I must have caught him when his ears were back, because he had huge ears.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (25).JPG

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (26).JPG

 We were glad to see the Pilot, and get a prime parking spot, right in front of the fuel island.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (27).JPG

 It was fun to watch all the activity and listen to the drivers talking about the highway.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (28).JPG

 Within a few hours the lot was full, and we could hear truckers asking if there were any more parking spots.

Omaha, Sioux Falls, Mitchell (29).JPG

 We went inside for a light supper, then watched a hunting movie on my laptop.  Cerwin stayed in his seat, while I snuggled up in my sleeping bag in the bottom bunk, where I soon fell asleep – until 5:00 this morning.  (That’s good for me, considering that it is 6:00 back home in Pennsylvania.)

DSC_0006.JPG

 This was the view outside my window early this  morning (Friday).  Cerwin is still sleeping, it is dark outside, and the wind is rocking the truck, but I am snug as a bug (even barefooted), drinking coffee from the thermos we filled last night.   It was dark when I took this picture, but I was able to use light from the truck stop.  I did not use a flash.

I hear Cerwin stirring, so my world will soon get much larger as we listen to the CB and the radio for road and weather reports.

On the Road to Chilliwack, BC

Day 2

South Bend to Omaha

S Bend to.JPG

We were on the road by 4:30 this morning.  I was surprised at how much traffic there was at that time of day – but then, we were approaching Chicago.  I missed the Illinois sign because of the dark.

We saw some high waters just before entering Iowa, although this place looked like it was prepared.

When http://www.xanga.com/slmret noticed that I enjoy following the Iditarod, she said I may enjoy this mystery, so I found a used one online.

I don’t often read murder mysteries, but this one has me “hooked.”  I told Cerwin I am going to pick up this book every time I get sleepy while we’re driving.

Some of the language is raw, however, I am enjoying the great descriptions of life on the trail.

 It was time for brunch, so we took advantage of this truck stop.

 It was good to see the Omaha chapel again.

 Cerwin skillfully backed the chapel into the line of trucks in front of the permanent chapel.

 Even better than seeing the chapel, was seeing Chaplain Dave and Laura Hertle, and our friend Kathy.

Since we were staying at the Hertle’s overnight, we treated them to supper at Cracker Barrel.

My trusty driver

We got into fog shortly after 9:00 this morning, then discovered we were at the highest point of I-80 east of the Mississippi (2,250 feet).  Maybe we were just driving through clouds.

Today (14).JPG

Peter Nyznk – the highlight of our day!

Shortly after we stopped for the evening – because Cerwin was out of driving time – there was a knock on Cerwin’s door.  Peter said, “I hope you are Cerwin High – and Doris I know you too.”

He gets the TFC prayer calendar and prayed for us this morning when he saw this was the day we were leaving to take the chapel to British Columbia.

If I remember correctly, he was talking to his wife on the cell phone when he first saw us, and said to her, “You won’t believe what I just saw.  I think it is the TFC chapel that is going to British Columbia.”

When we pulled into the rest stop, he followed – just to talk to us.  He had to keep going, but stuck some money in Cerwin’s shirt pocket, and said this is for your supper.

He said we made his day – but he made ours.  We had several people blow their horns, or wave, and a few asked questions – but this visit was the best!

Thanks, Peter.  We pray that God will bless you richly.

Today (15).JPG

This is view from our bedroom window (the cab).  It began raining shortly before dark.

Today (16).JPG

I like this view better – when I changed the focus to the rain running down the window.

We are going to bed early so we can get another early start.
