Lightening Bugs (Fireflies)

DSC_0006.JPG

Ian was excited when he came home from Bible School on Friday night, and anxious to show us his prizes – one of them this “bug container.”

Yes, he did say his Bible verse – and very confidentially at that.  His mom said that after his afternoon nap, he came downstairs saying, “I learned my verse Mom – all by myself.”

Jana and Jared were willing helpers in trying to catch the bugs.

One more for the container.

Ian keep looking at them…

…and smiling!

I really wanted this photo to look better, but it was over exposed, and I couldn’t fix it.  I love the expression on Jared’s face when he caught this lightening bug…

So I played with it!

Bible School

Bible School (2).JPG

I am always amazed at how many children and adults attend our Vacation Bible School.  This photo was taken from the balcony after classes were over, and everyone had gathered in the sanctuary.  The attendance chart said there were 574 there on this night – Thursday.

While standing during closing prayer, I took a photo to the right…

…then to the left so you can get a better idea of the number of people in attendance.

Thursday night is parents’ night, when the children have opportunity to take parents and grandparents to their classroom.  This is Jenna with her Connect-Four game.

It will look like this when it is finished.

He was pleased to know his Bible verse.

And he loved his shirt.  Notice his hand prints.  That’s our son, Jere, (his Dad) to his left.

Ian was looking so serious, maybe because he was still struggling with his Bible verse.  He could say it with a bit of help, but not quite good enough to say to the teacher – and he really wanted to win a prize.

When I told him that he was looking too serious, I got this!

Our teachers do an amazing job of decorating their rooms, choosing crafts, and sharing God’s principles.  I am sure that is why our own church families and neighboring families enjoy our Bible School.

Great  job – superintendants and teachers.

And They Thought It Was Squirrel-Proof

DSC_0002.JPG

I finally figured out how to get the birdseed out of this thing:  firmly grip the top of the birdfeeder with my hind feet, hang upsidedown, reach in, shove the seed into my mouth, and eat!

DSC_0006.JPG

What’s a squirrel supposed to do when this is the only feeder with birdseed in it?

The Barn Roof

Barn.JPG

The old, deteriorating shingles on the right side of my brothers’ barn roof had been removed by the time I took the first picture.

If you missed my first entry, and the history of the barn, check out my July 6 post.

Barn (1).JPG

By the next day that side was finished, and repair had begun on the left side.

Barn (3).JPG

The roof is looking good on this side.

Barn (4).JPG

You can tell this barn was built long before the road was used by anyone other than those who lived here, as it was placed right next to the road.

Barn (5).JPG

Work on the east side had not yet begun on Tuesday.

Barn (6).JPG

When I went to the post office on Wednesday, I noticed they had already installed half of the steel.

What a difference a week made in the appearance of the old barn.

I am so pleased to see this restoration, as this is where I spent my childhood.  My parents moved here when I was about two, and today my three brothers use this barn, and farm the land that has been in our family for five generations.

Friends

When our “old” Pikangikum team leaders learned that Stuart and Delores Swartzentruber (Hopelines) were in our area, Jesse and Martha Copenhaver invited us to their place for supper – so we could spend Wednesday evening together.

The Nolts, Stevens, Copenhavers, and Cerwin and I were team leaders in the late 80s and early 90s when our church sent a dozen young people – and two sets of team leaders – to Pikangikum each summer.  We lived on the reserve and taught Bible school every afternoon for a week.

Pikangikum is a First Nation reserve in northwestern Ontario, and where most of us met Stuart and Delores, as that is where they served as missionaries at the time.

Delores and Stuart are in their final weeks of a yearlong sabbatical in the States – before going back to their current assignment in Sudbury, Ontario.

After supper, we went outside to enjoy the Copenhaver’s beautiful yard.

Martha showed us their beautiful Stargazer daylily.

She said this one is several years old, but has never been so tall or large.

She also told us the name of this flower – but I forget what it is.

This is the same kind of flower – just a different color – and was a recent gift for their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary.

ozarksfarmgirl says they are Mandevilla.  Thanks.  I thought someone would know.

~~~
After walking around the yard, we had a wonderful visit on the patio just outside the basement room where we had supper.
 Friendships are one of life’s great treasures.
Rainy Days
Rainy Days.JPG
I think today (Thursday) was the first day this week that we did not have rain.
Rainy Days (5).JPG
Monday evening we had a downpour
It was almost more than our spouts and down drains could handle.
Trees were heavy from the pouring rain.
Tuesday was a warm, sunny, unsettled day, then during the afternoon we saw rain approaching again – coming from the south.
Wednesday afternoon another thunderstorm came from the southwest.
Rainy Days (23).JPG
Because our house faces southwest, and there are open fields in that direction, I could watch the rain approaching.
With warm, rainy days, it feels like we are living in a rainforest .  I think if I sat next to a field of corn, I could watch it grow!
