High Reunion

Sunday, July 11

7-11 (1).JPG

I think the High family started a new tradition this year by having a summer picnic at High Sports, rather than a Christmas Dinner. Everyone brought two containers of food – hot and cold.

 7-11 (2).JPG

This picnic consists of Cerwin’s dad’s siblings, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

High Sports is owned by Uncle Sam High (black shirt facing the camera) and his wife, Betty (black shirt with back to camera) and their sons.

We had a wonderful afternoon of visiting with aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Every person who attended received a pink paper bracelet which entitled you to one free game on the grounds.

I Think It’s Rather Ugly

…and Beautiful Rain

July 10 & 11

7-10-10 (1).JPG

On Saturday, July 10, Cerwin got the European mount of the buck he shot last fall.

 7-10-10 (2).JPG

He wanted a “memorial” of the first deer he took with his crossbow. The European mount is cheaper than a head mount, so that is good, but I still think they are rather ugly. When we were in Germany, and visited castles where the owners were hunters, all the mounts looked like this. I’m glad we have a room in the garage for creatures like this.

7-11-10 Rain (1).JPG

There was a beautiful rain on Sunday morning, July 11.

You can see our house reflected in our new light post.

7-11-10 Rain (4).JPG

It had been dry for several weeks, with the exception of a few quick thunder/wind/hail storms, so this gentle rain was wonderful to watch.

If I post at unusual times – or not at all for the next few days – don’t be concerned. I’ll tell you why when I catch up to myself and post the details for July 21 to 26.

Part 4 ~ Holmes County Flea Market and Warthers

1 (1).JPG

I love old barns. This one was next to our motel in Berlin, Ohio

1 (2).JPG

I had more fun here then I’ve had shopping in a long time – even bought a few things. I prefer online shopping, but this was a fun place to walk through – and find things I didn’t know I needed.  Except, I did know I needed a new purse – the one I grab when I go to the grocery store, with all my cards, money, and ID.

1 (3).JPG

I had been here before, and knew Cerwin would be impressed. He was! This is located in Dover, Ohio.

1 (4).JPG

Freida’s (Mrs. Warther) Gardens are beautiful and welcoming when you arrive at the museum.

1 (5).JPG

The workshop where Ernest “Mooney” carved was built in 1912.

1 (6).JPG

There are 5,000 arrowheads in the shop.

1 (7).JPG

The museum is full of his incredible carvings – mostly trains.

1 (8).JPG

Carving was his hobby, he designed knives to help make a living for his family. I’ve had a Warther knife for many years, and it continues to be my favorite paring knife.

1 (9).JPG

Our guide (in pink) met Mooney before he died. She had lots of information about him and his carvings saved in her memory bank. In this photo she is explaining how he used ivory in his carvings.

1 (10).JPG

The trains he carved were made of walnut, ebony, or ivory.

1 (11).JPG

1 (12).JPG

1 (13).JPG

He worked in a steel mill and carved a replica of it, with moving parts. He joked that he could even make the lazy guys work in this mill.

1 (14).JPG

On days that Mooney’s grandson Mark is here, he creates a wooden pliers for each child who goes through the museum.

1 (15).JPG

He makes a few cuts – just like his grandfather did – without sawdust or wood pieces left over.

1 (16).JPG

After demonstrating the pliers and handing it to a young boy, he explained how his grandpa got so much done in a day: Up early to carve, off to work at the steel mill, home from work for supper and family time, early to bed – NO TV.

1 (17).JPG

Mooney’s pliers

1 (18).JPG

The pliers tree is one of his masterpieces. He “saw” it in the wood. This is made out of one piece of wood – no sawdust or leftover pieces. If every pliers is closed, it will go back to the size and shape of the original piece of wood. He demonstrated this on a Johnny Carson show.

More train carvings.

A variety of sources for ivory.

Abraham Lincoln was his hero.

The funeral train was filled with amazing details – even the casket of President Lincoln. My photo of that did not come out very good.

1 (30).JPG

His last train, which he never finished – thus some of the pieces in front of it

After leaving the museum, we watched men making knives in the workshop.

It’s Been a Busy, Wonderful Day

Sunday, July 18

We had two picnics at the pavilion in our woodlot. The first one, at lunch, was my dad’s siblings, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren  (The Hershey Family Reunion). I counted eighty people and am sure I missed a few. (photos coming when I catch up to this date.) It was so much fun to see and visit with aunts, uncles, and cousins.

After everyone left (about 5:00 p.m.) we changed tablecloths, refreshed the water and juice containers, and added new candles to the small lanterns on each table. By six-oclock our Sunday School class came for our summer picnic. We also had a good turnout, with only a few missing. If I counted correctly, there were about thirty-six people here. It was a great evening.

Everyone just went home and I am weary and ready for bed. For that reason I am only posting one picture from our day in the Berlin, Ohio, area last week.

I took this picture on Thursday morning, July 8 – outside our motel.

Tomorrow night I will post the conclusion of our day in Berlin and Holmes County, Ohio.
