Road Trip to Indianapolis

July 5-8

Part 3 ~ Berlin, Ohio

1 (1).JPG

We arrived in Berlin about 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, about the time everything was closing. That was okay with me, because we just felt like walking around town and maybe taking an evening drive through the countryside.

1 (2).JPG

First, we needed to find a motel. Zinck’s Inn had a notice that they still had rooms. The rooms were at Zinck’s Carriage House a few blocks away.

1 (3).JPG

The clerk asked if we can do steps because the only rooms left were on the second floor. This was the pretty path to the steps (between the house and the tree).

 1 (4).JPG

Our room was incredibly nice and comfortable.

Six homemade cookies, and chips in the basket.

After getting settled in our room we went for a walk around town.

1 (12).JPG

This quilt shop was our last stop before going to Boyd & Wurthmann Restaurant for supper. It was a great place to eat the local cuisine.

1 (13).JPG

After supper, we walked to our motel to get the car for a drive in the country. The Amish dress a bit differently here than in our area. Their buggies are also designed differently than the ones we see in Lancaster County, PA.

I found the wheat shocks fascinating.

The sheep looked content as they grazed in this field.

1 (19).JPG

1 (20).JPG

After completing our drive, we came back to Zinck’s Inn – the main lodge. There was a large balcony where guests were enjoying the scenery.

1 (21).JPG

It was a relaxing place to drink coffee, and do my evening blogging.

I sat at a table just inside this window.

Road Trip to Indianapolis

July 5-8

Part 2 – Indianapolis & Beaverdam

1 (1).JPG

Lunchtime on the way to Indianapolis on Tuesday morning.

1 (2).JPG

This was the first time I saw the new chapel since it was placed at the truck stop. It looks beautiful.

1 (3).JPG

Cerwin did some finishing touches on the interior and exterior, while Volunteer Chaplain Joseph assisted. In this photo they are installing a tract rack.

Cerwin’s motivation for going back to Indy was to fix an exterior light that broke when he was installing it a few weeks ago, then Chaplain Howard mentioned that they could use another rack. Cerwin thought they may also be installing a walkway, but that didn’t work out. Because Dorinda is in a wheelchair, they will need a ramp, which will probably eliminate the need for a walkway.

1 (4).JPG

Enjoying supper with Chaplain Howard and Dorinda Burrell, and Volunteer Chaplain Roger.

1 (5).JPG

Do any of my Xanga friends recognize this couple?

It’s Christy BluebirdChris and her husband, Ed.

1 (6).JPG

Ed is a volunteer chaplain at this truck stop.

1 (7).JPG

It was so much fun to meet her, but we didn’t have enough time to talk.  Maybe we can find some alone time when we go back for the chapel dedication in September.

1 (8).JPG

After supper we visited in the chapel, sharing chaplain and trucker stories.

1 (9).JPG

This truck stop is a TA Travel Center.

1 (10).JPG

It was a beautiful evening, so we continued to visit outside the chapel, before the locals went home and we headed to our motel.

1 (11).JPG

I like this picture.

1 (13).JPG

These guys entertained me while Cerwin registered at the motel, and I waited in the car. I think they were brothers. I could see their parents in the motel room behind them.

1 (21).JPG

The next day (Wednesday) we stopped at Pilot Travel Plaza, Beaverdam, Ohio, to see the Second Chance Chapel.

1 (14).JPG

We had never seen this one, as it was built in Ohio.

1 (15).JPG

1 (16).JPG

Volunteer Chaplain Terry was on duty.

1 (17).JPG

It was fun getting to know him, and learning that he and Cerwin share a love for bluegrass music and guitars.

1 (18).JPG

Terry has a great voice.

1 (19).JPG

I expect there is good singing when he is in charge of a worship service.

1 (20).JPG

Cerwin and Terry singing Will the Circle Be Unbroken.

After saying goodbye to Terry, we went inside to get lunch at McDonalds. I enjoyed one of their new fruit smoothies.

~~~
After this we headed toward Berlin, Ohio, for a one-day vacation. I told Cerwin I needed a few hours in a place where nobody knew my name.
Road Trip to Indianapolis
July 5-8
Part 1
Pittsburgh (1).JPG
After dropping off some reports at TFC’s International Office (not far from Three Mile Island) we headed west.
Pittsburgh (2).JPG
Why am I suddenly hungry for ice cream? I guess I better not try to get inside, because the notes say “Security Camera on Board.”
Pittsburgh (3).JPG
After four hours on the road, the skyline of Pittsburgh came into view. This was our destination for today.
Pittsburgh (4).JPG
Our GPS unit took us right to David L. Lawrence Conference Center where the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference was being held.
Pittsburgh (6).JPG
Water flowing under the convention center
We were a bit early for the 3:30 p.m. reunion of our 2008 300th Anniversary Brethren Heritage tour of Germany and Switzerland, so enjoyed some of the beauty surrounding the center.
Pittsburgh (8).JPG
A beautiful view of the Allegheny River
We eventually relaxed near the large windows, just outside the main room where many delegates and attendees were assembled.
Pittsburgh (9).JPG
The river was busy with boats, as this was the July 4 holiday for many people.
Pittsburgh (10).JPG
Pittsburgh (11).JPG
After meeting our friends John and Arlene Heisey (who were attending the conference), we headed upstairs to the room where the Germany/Switzerland reunion was being held. In the process we walked above the large meeting room that I mentioned earlier.
Pittsburgh (12).JPG
Pittsburgh (14).JPG
The Reunion – what fun to see these tour friends again. Arlene Heisey’s scrapbook was a highlight.
Pittsburgh (15).JPG
Left to Right: John & Arlene Heisey (PA), Debbie & Ken Bomberger (PA), Paul White (VA), Rick & Pat Edwards (NC), Joyce & Bill Brumbaugh (IN),  me & Cerwin (PA).
There were eleven in the room most of the hour-and-a-half, plus four others you will meet later. That means there were fifteen of the twenty-eight tour members at the conference.
Pittsburgh (16).JPG
We were pleased to see Stafford Fredrick. Ken looks like he is ready to punch him with a boxing move, but he is actually preparing to hug him.
We weren’t sure if he and Linda (VA) were going to get to the reunion, because he was the “keeper of the light” in the main meetings. In other words, he was the timekeeper for those who were asking questions or responding to them.
Pittsburgh (17).JPG
Ken welcoming Linda.
Pittsburgh (18).JPG
After a wonderful time with our tour friends, we headed back to the conference area, with a goal of stopping in the large display room.
Pittsburgh (19).JPG
Arlene decided to leave her scrapbook at the Brethren Revival Fellowship booth. Her son-in-law Eric Brubaker was manning it when we arrived. John is greeting Melody Keller, a friend from Maine.
Pittsburgh (20).JPG
Mary Zimmerman, a friend from our church, was helping at the New Windsor booth. They were selling items that were made in third world countries, some from our church members in these countries.
Pittsburgh (21).JPG
We were exceptionally pleased to meet Jim and Pam Hardenbrook (currently from Alaska). They were our Germany/Switzerland tour hosts, and could not come to the reunion because of a conflict in meetings.
Pittsburgh (22).JPG
John and Cerwin
We decided to try the Sonoma Grille for supper.
Pittsburgh (23)
It was a delightful evening.
The restaurant was full and noisy, but we were seated in a back area that was wonderfully quiet. We see John and Arlene frequently as we go to church together, are in the same Sunday school class (he is our teacher), but rarely spend time together – just the four of us.
After saying goodby, they went on to an evening meeting, and we proceeded west another fifteen miles where we had a motel reserved for the night.
I can easily remember when there were just two men – our sons – doing this, now our grandsons enjoy it as well. As I watched this I wondered, “When did these three young men – sons of our sons – become men?”
Our Family’s July 4th Celebration
Part 3 ~ Dripping Water, A Running Tent, Opening Ceremony
 3 (2).JPG
I know this picture looks like I am featuring Jesse’s PlayDoh, but in reality I want you to look at our son Jeff (left) who is getting ready to drop some water on Jared’s head.
3 (3).JPG
Jeff always did it in secret – quite a few times – and Jared said, “That bird peed on me again.”
Finally, after Jeff dropped water on his head in a rather noticeable action, and Jared saw who it was, he said, “It was you all the time, wasn’t it?”
Then, just before the big guys set off the fireworks, Nathan said he was in charge of our opening ceremony!
I can’t figure out how (or why) he does this, but the guys were impressed.
