Mackworth Island

Friday Evening, July 30

1 (2).JPG

The girls were not yet finished swimming when we got home from Popham Fort, so they spent some time in the Myers’ pool.

1 (3).JPG

We ordered some Papa John’s pizza for a quick supper before going to Mackworth Island for a one-and-a-quarter-mile walk.

1 (4).JPG

These five were ready to hike before some of the others, so i suggested a photo.

1 (5).JPG

The first side path led down to the water, so this was our first stop. In the background, you can see the road that leads from the mainland to the island.

1 (6).JPG

Abby was teaching the younger girls how to skip stones in the water.

1 (7).JPG

They didn’t always skip, but they usually made a splash.

This is a beautiful walking path.

Diana coming back to the main path. The island is above sea level, so every path to the water is down.

Gloria, Jana, Abigail, and Elizabeth returning from another walkway to the ocean.

More beauty along the way.

It was a beautiful evening for sailing

Our daughter Diane relaxing while the girls explored.

What are they looking at?

1 (23).JPG

It was Diana climbing the wall

1 (24).JPG

Rose hips

1 (25).JPG

We surprised a red squirrel

1 (26).JPG

The setting sun made the water glitter like gold.

More pictures from Mackworth Island tomorrow.

Fort Popham

After packing up all our beach supplies and taking them to the van, we toured the fort.

When I walked through this door and turned left, I found a totally dark room. It felt kind of strange not knowing what was inside, so I took a flash photo to see what was there.

Fort (17).JPG

I called the girls inside and asked them to stand in the room. “No way they said in unison.” The room was as dark as the background on this post.

Fort (18).JPG

They would not go inside even after they saw what I saw with my camera’s flash.

We learned that this hole is where a cannon was installed and fired. (The bars were put there later.)

Cerwin was happiest sitting under the shade of this tree on the edge of the beach.

2 (11).JPG

I noticed these guys (I think a father and son) looking for underwater critters.

When I asked to see what was inside their bucket, this is what I saw.

Colten and Lydia exploring the water’s edge.

Do you think you can explain the mystery of God?
Do you think you can diagram God Almighty?
God is far higher than you can imagine, far deeper than you can comprehend, stretching farther than earth’s horizons, far wider than the endless ocean.

Part 3 – Lunchtime & A Seagull

1 (1).JPG

Just about lunchtime

1 (2).JPG

Sandwiches and carrots…

1 (3).JPG

…and some of Diane’s wonderful cherry tomatoes. They were like eating candy.

1 (4).JPG

Notice our paper-plate-hats.

1 (5).JPG

1 (6).JPG

1 (7).JPG

The girls reserved some bread crusts for the seagulls, and had fun enticing them to come fairly close.

1 (10).JPG

I snapped that picture at just the right moment.

1 (13).JPG

1 (13).JPG

I think someone moved a bit too much and frightened the gull.

1 (15).JPG

1 (16).JPG

…and then it was gone

1 (16a).JPG

So the girls began playing again.

Be assured that I will post more pictures tomorrow night – Lord willing.

It’s a wonder God didn’t lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us. Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us. He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ.

Swimming At Fort Popham

Friday, July 30

1 (1).JPG

Fort Popham is a coastal defense land battery at the mouth of the Kennebec River in Phippsburg, Maine. I’ll tell you more about it in a few days.

1 (2).JPG

The girls wanted to go to a Maine beach, and Diane (our daughter) thought Fort Popham would be fun for them – and it was. We had trouble convincing them to go home later in the day.

1 (3).JPG

The tide was out when we arrived in the midmorning and the water felt cold.

1 (4).JPG

The girls went in gingerly at first – but gradually they adjusted to the temperature, and spent a lot of time in the water.

1 (4a).JPG

Diana and Jana

It was a sunny day, so suntan lotion was a necessity.

1 (5).JPG

Jana and Gloria went to the van for the inner tube.

1 (8).JPG

Gloria

1 (9).JPG

Cerwin is not a fan of the beach – and never did take his shoes off. When I asked him why he didn’t go barefooted, he said, “Why would I want dirty sand between my toes.”

1 (10).JPG

Lydia was caring for Colten again, and had permission to bring him with us. He loved the beach and all the fun things he could do with sand.

1 (11).JPG

1 (12).JPG

Lydia helped him build sand castles.

1 (13).JPG

Diana  on a rock formation

1 (14).JPG

Gloria and Jana running at the water’s edge

1 (20).JPG

While they played and splashed, I walked to a rock formation to see what I could find.

1 (19).JPG

The continuing ebb and flow of the tide creates interesting seaweed formations.

1 (21).JPG

Sometimes this is covered with water, and at low tide there are just small pools of water for these things of the sea.

1 (22).JPG

1 (16).JPG

The morning sunlight created an interesting pattern on the rolling water.

1 (15).JPG

There were a few pieces of seaweed floating near the edges and around the rocks.

1 (17).JPG

It is so refreshing for this country girl to spend time in salty water and see landscape that is generally unfamiliar to me.
