Swimming At Fort Popham

Friday, July 30

Fort Popham is a coastal defense land battery at the mouth of the Kennebec River in Phippsburg, Maine. I’ll tell you more about it in a few days.

The girls wanted to go to a Maine beach, and Diane (our daughter) thought Fort Popham would be fun for them – and it was. We had trouble convincing them to go home later in the day.

The tide was out when we arrived in the midmorning and the water felt cold.

The girls went in gingerly at first – but gradually they adjusted to the temperature, and spent a lot of time in the water.

Diana and Jana

It was a sunny day, so suntan lotion was a necessity.

Jana and Gloria went to the van for the inner tube.

Cerwin is not a fan of the beach – and never did take his shoes off. When I asked him why he didn’t go barefooted, he said, “Why would I want dirty sand between my toes.”

Lydia was caring for Colten again, and had permission to bring him with us. He loved the beach and all the fun things he could do with sand.

Lydia helped him build sand castles.

While they played and splashed, I walked to a rock formation to see what I could find.

The continuing ebb and flow of the tide creates interesting seaweed formations.

Sometimes this is covered with water, and at low tide there are just small pools of water for these things of the sea.

The morning sunlight created an interesting pattern on the rolling water.

There were a few pieces of seaweed floating near the edges and around the rocks.

It is so refreshing for this country girl to spend time in salty water and see landscape that is generally unfamiliar to me.
