Maine

Blackberries, Goldenrod, Rosa rugosa

From Saturday’s photo shoot with Xanga friend Michelle (coolmomofeight)

…but first – a few photos from Thursday.

1.JPG

When carrying a tub of laundry to the clothesline for Diane, I noticed some wild blackberries, and after hanging up the clothing, investigated (tasted) the situation.  Upon further examination (and another taste), I concluded there were enough ripe ones that I needed containers for holding more of this luscious fruit.

1 (1).JPG

Hezekiah, who was nearby, located the boxes, and offered to help.

1 (2).JPG

He claimed I ate every fourth berry – and that may be fairly accurate!

1 (3).JPG

 They were DELICIOUS!

Now to the Beach

1 (4).JPG

Everyone should have an out-of-state photographer friend like Michelle who is familiar with backroads and locations known only to locals.

1 (5).JPG

We’re off to one of her favorite beaches in Maine.

1 (6).JPG

I think we could go here a dozen more times, and she would be able to give me new information.

1 (7).JPG

We walked slowly, taking in our surroundings like these pine trees.

1 (8).JPG

This dead one looked almost petrified…

1 (9).JPG

…and in a strange way was kind of pretty when silhouetted against the blue sky.

1 (10).JPG

Our first view of the ocean inlet came as we got to the top of the small hill.

1 (11).JPG

Before getting our feet wet, we took time for some shots of the sea grass, flowers, and fence.

1 (12).JPG

1 (13).JPG

1 (14).JPG

As we got closer, we noticed interesting reds and yellows.

1 (15).JPG

I recognized the yellow as Goldenrod.

1 (16).JPG

1 (17).JPG

However, I could not identify the pink flowers with red apple-like fruit…

1 (18).JPG

…that covered much of the area.

1 (19).JPG

1 (20).JPG

Upon further research – the Internet – I discovered that these are Rosa rugosa (other names are:  Rugosa rose, saltspray rose, beach tornado).

The following dialog about Rosa rugosa is from the Internet – but the photos are mine.

1 (24).JPG

Opening in June, these 2 1/2 to 3 1/2″ blooms sweeten the air and attract bumblebees with their fragrance.

1 (25).JPG

The blooms will continue sporadically until frost.

 1 (26).JPG

It may sprawl a little more than the hybrid teas that we see nowadays, and the flower petals tend to flop this way and that.

1 (27).JPG

All in all, it often has a kind of shaggy, unkempt air about it, but that’s what gives this plant its character.

1 (28).JPG

With colors ranging from white to yellow, pink, and purple, these gorgeous blooms can be either single, semi-double, or double.

1 (21).JPG

The blooms later give way to luscious brick-red rose hips so large that they look like cherry tomatoes.

 1 (23).JPG

The orange to red rose hips are oval and glossy, lasting until late autumn.

1 (22).JPG

The stems are incredibly spiny, densely covered in short, gray, needlelike thorns about 1/4 to 1/2″ long.

1 (29).JPG

Okay, it’s time to head for the beach.

1 (30).JPG

I could hardly wait to walk on the sand and in the salty waves.

1 (31).JPG

…but those pictures will have to wait until tomorrow night.

Traveling Home from Maine

DSC_0002.JPG

Since this was our granddaughter Abigail’s first time of driving from Maine to Pennsylvania, she decided to follow us.  I spent the entire ten hours in her vehicle.  She is spending a few months with our son, Jere, his wife Kristen, and their five children.

DSC_0006.JPG

Abigail did a great job of driving and keeping an eye on grandpa’s car – while I read a book.

I don’t usually have (or take) time to read books, but the bluegrass festival gave me that opportunity, and I became “hooked” on the three-book Little Hickman Creek Series by Sharlene MacLaren.

Cerwin’s passenger was Andrew Bucher – cleaning our CRV windows while Cerwin filled the gas tank.  He plans to spend a month or so helping on the farm of a Pennsylvania uncle.

Bluegrass Festival

Sunday

We went to the festival a bit later then the other three days – because we chose to go to Brunswick Church of the Brethren (the home church of our Maine family).  We could have gone to morning worship at the festival, but had not seen our Brunswick church friends the last few times we were here.

DSC_0019.JPG

Lydia (just under the space between the “T” in Point and the “B” in Beach was the only one from our house who went to church at the festival – due to the fact that final practice for The Children of Bluegrass concert in the evening was just after morning worship on the beach.

Our afternoon and evening was similar to the past three days – DELIGHTFUL!

DSC_0021.JPG

A headliner – and my favorite of the day – was Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.

DSC_0027.JPG

Doyle does lots of gospel, and I was pleasantly pleased when they  removed their hats to sing the gospel portion – a respect and honor to the Lord that very few men do any more.

The closing group – Del McCoury Band – came on after 10:00 p.m.  That was way too late for me, and since Diane was also ready to go home, we left Cerwin and the grandchildren at the park.  Mark (our son-law) got home about the same time we did.  He drives motorcoach and had taken a soccer team to Burlington, Vermont, for the weekend.

Bluegrass Festival

Saturday

I’m back online.  I think my “free” wireless access closed down over the weekend – plus I wasn’t near my computer very often.

Saturday.JPG

What fun to spend a few hours at the beach with coolmomofeight.

Saturday (1).JPG

It was a beautiful Saturday morning, and since the tide was coming in, we had fun getting wet.

m162837433

I “stole” this one of me from her site.  I’ll do a post of beach pictures in another day or two.

Thanks, Michelle, for taking me to one of your favorites spots.

Saturday (8).JPG

Diane (our daughter) has been quite busy – baking blueberry bread for the festival.

Saturday (7).JPG

She’s either mixing the batter or baking it when we get up in the morning, when we leave for the festival, and when we get home at night.

Saturday (9).JPG

She baked twenty-eight batches (224 loaves).  It was fun watching people carrying these containers – and telling them our daughter had baked it.  They always replied that they couldn’t wait to taste it, it is delicious, and some said it was their second loaf!

Saturday (11).JPG

She is making it for their friends – The Chesley’s – who have a market stand at the festival.

Saturday (12).JPG

Betty and Wayne at their market wagon.

Saturday (5).JPG

Thomas Point Beach at low tide.

Saturday (6).JPG

The same spot at high tide.

Saturday (4).JPG

It is surely a pleasant place for camping.

Saturday (2).JPG

I didn’t ask how many campers were here, but there were hundreds.

Saturday (3).JPG

An afternoon view of the concert area.  Most people leave their lawn chairs in place during the entire four days, consequently there are often empty chairs during the day.  By evening the seats are full, many listen from their campsite, and hundreds are standing or walking around the grounds.

Saturday (13).JPG

I decided to splurge and buy the lobster meal which was available for Saturday supper.

Saturday (14).JPG

I forgot to take a picture of my meal before breaking the lobster in half and giving the two baked potatoes and blueberry muffin to Cerwin.  He doesn’t like lobster and purchased a bowl of chili to go with his potatoes and muffin.

The lobster, clams, and corn were yummy!  The lobster was one of the best I ever tasted.  It was made in seaweed over charcoal.

Saturday (15).JPG

Saturday’s headliners were the Grascals and…

Saturday (16).JPG

Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder.

It was another fabulous day of bluegrass and relaxation.  I could get used to this!

Bluegrass Festival

Thomas Point Beach, Brunswick, Maine

Bluegrass.JPG

Because this in the last Bluegrass Festival for Thomas Point – and it is only two miles from our daughter, Diane’s family – Cerwin and I decided to attend all four days.

Bluegrass (2).JPG

We love bluegrass, but have never attended a festival, and have been pleasantly surprised.

Bluegrass (8).JPG

We came in on Wednesday evening – shortly after arriving in Maine – and set up our chairs about twenty rows back (next to vendor row).

Bluegrass (1).JPG

Thursday was hot and sunny, so we were glad there was a hat vendor.  We took Hezekiah and Lydia along that day.  Lydia is going every day, as she is under age twelve – and free.  Hezekiah would like it too, but it is too expensive for his purse.  Thursday was half price for him.

Bluegrass (7).JPG

We expected to enjoy the headliners – but are thoroughly enjoying the New England locals.  The young fiddler on the left is amazing.  It is so enjoyable to sit here all afternoon and evening and read a book while listening to the music.

Bluegrass (5).JPG

My favorite so far is the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band!

Bluegrass (4).JPG

Rhonda Vincent was the headliner for Thurday.  Last night (Friday) it was Marty Stuart.  Both put on an amazing show.

Bluegrass (6).JPG

Lydia is trying to get as many autographs as possible!  Rhonda and her crew (even the bus driver) honored her with their signatures.  Marty Stuart did as well, but I didn’t get a photo of them.

Bluegrass (3).JPG

Only in New England do they spell and pronounce lobster – LOBSTAH.  And yesterday one Maine group introduced a song by saying they were going to sing a Jimmy Martin song – pronouncing it MAAtin!

Bluegrass (9).JPG

I had a luscious lobstah roll for lunch on Thursday.

Bluegrass (10).JPG

 The onion rings are delicious!

Bluegrass (11).JPG

 Sunset at the festival.
