Sunset & Visiting
Sunday, August 30 and Monday, August 31
When I saw the pink glow in the eastern sky on Sunday evening, I knew there was a pretty sunset to our west.
On Sunday, Lydia mentioned that she has been here all summer, and had not played carpet ball with Great-grandma. We visited Cerwin’s mother several times, but hadn’t taken time to walk to the other side of the retirement community.
We called, and Mother had Monday evening open. During the conversation, it was decided that we would have supper with her in Landis Homes dining room. That was also a fun experience for Lydia.
We were a bit late, so had the dining room to ourselves.
Lydia had a great time playing carpet ball. I think she won all but one or two games – and we played more than a dozen.
By the expression on Lydia’s face, I expect she won this game.
Great-grandma and Lydia.
Lydia, Cerwin, and Uncle John (Mother’s brother).
When playing carpet ball, we are in the area of Uncle John and Aunt Bertha’s apartment. Mother asked if we wanted to stop for a visit. He is 93 and mother is almost 92.
Uncle John is a great storyteller.
He told us about some of his experiences during World War II – when he was in C.P.S. camp, and Bertha was at home with two little children. He said when reading some of their letters to each other during that time of their lives, they were reminded of the times Cerwin’s parents visited Bertha and brought her ham, potatoes, and eggs. He also mentioned how other people and the church helped them during that financially difficult time.
It was interesting to listen to him tell about his experiences as a forest firefighter – some frightening, others funny – while at C.P.S.
Lydia said that she could have listened to him all night.
Aunt Bertha is a sweet, gentle woman, and quietly listened to stories she probably heard many times. A few times she said, “No, John I don’t think it was quite like that.” John would rethink and usually say, “You are right, Bertha.”
Other times, as he was telling a happening, he would say, “No, no, it wasn’t like that.” Then you could see him visualizing the moment, and he would continue after making a needed correction, or affirming that his first thought was correct.
After getting back to Mother’s apartment, and looking over her finances and paperwork for August, I asked Lydia to pose with her. Lydia is going home to Maine on Tuesday, and I didn’t want to miss an opportunity for this picture.

I posted early today, because we have a 7:00 wedding this evening – so I expect it will be a late night. It is an outside wedding, and the weather is as perfect as an early September day can be.
Look for pictures in the upcoming days. Rob and Jess asked me to be their candid photographer – and you know that I’d be taking lots of pictures even without being asked.

Ian’s Seventh Birthday Party
Saturday, August 29
Continued
Can you see by his face that this is what he wanted.
He had lots of fun with all the sounds (including his voice) that can be amplified with this helmet.
Jared spent a lot of time blowing up this balloon and letting it go.
Ian pinning the nose on the lion.
Jared
Jana
It looks like Jesse did best.
Jesse loved playing with a helium balloon after I made sure he could reach the string even when the balloon was on the ceiling.
I have no idea what Jana was doing. 🙂
Ian with his dad and mom.
…and then there is Jake. I don’t think he even got a piece of cake.
You can see by his eyes that he really wants a piece of cake.
It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning, your faithfulness in the evening.

Cerwin Graduated From Physical Therapy

Ian’s Seventh Birthday Party
Saturday, August 29
Look at that! Cerwin is painting with his right arm.
This is good news for us, and we are pleased that Friday, August 28, was his last day of physical therapy. He has full mobility, and just has to regain strength in his shoulder – and that will come with time.
It has been almost four months since his fall, and next week it will be three months since his rotator cuff surgery,
On Monday August 31, he took up the challenge of trimming our bushes. He can usually do that all at once, this time he took a break twice because it started bothering his shoulder – but he did it!
On Saturday night (Ian’s seventh birthday) we went to Jere and Kristen’s to celebrate. He wanted a jungle theme this year.
He is a great seven-year-old, who is serious at times, but also loves to have fun. He loves school, and enjoys first grade.
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you…
It is fun to go to a seven-year-old’s birthday party.
Lydia reading a card to him.
A handmade door hanger and a jungle pencil from his sister, Jana.

More of the birthday party tomorrow night.

The rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.

Loxley’s
Friday, August 28
Warning! Do not read this when you are hungry.
It was time to take our Pennsylvania children out to celebrate their 2009 birthdays. We recently heard about Loxley’s – on Centerville Road near Lancaster – and decided to try it. We were not disappointed. Notice that there is a lot of outside dining – on the first and second floors. I made reservations, and that can only be done for inside seating, which turned out okay because it was a very rainy evening.
Left to right: Cerwin, Jeff, Chris, Deb, Roy, Kristen, and Jere. Notice my Asian Chicken Salad to the left of Cerwin. It was HUGE. I brought two-thirds of it home. I could have eaten more, but we all saw the dessert menu before ordering.
Entree
Jere and Cerwin each ordered Angus Beef Filet Steaks with mixed vegetables and sweet potato fries – and proclaimed it one of the best filets they have ever eaten.
Jeff also had an Angus Beef Filet, but chose rice and onion rings.
Kristen had Pan Seared Scallops.
Roy chose Loaf of Stew – beef stew in a bread bowl.
Deb’s Chicken and Penne
Chris had a Mediterranean Panini – not a slider as I first mentioned.
Thanks for the correction, Chris. After I looked up the definition, I didn’t think it fit the description of a slider.

Desserts
Three of us (Deb, Kristen, and I) chose Creme Brulee. I love Creme Brulee, and this was delicious.
Roy’s chocolate dessert.
Cerwin and Jeff chose chocolate raspberry cheese cake.
Chris’ chocolate dessert
Jere’s Key Lime dessert.
Even though it was raining, I decided to walk up the steps to see the second floor. I want to eat up here sometime.
Deb waiting for Roy to finish his exploratory tour of the second floor.
It was a fabulous, rainy evening.
The LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Elizabethtown Fair
Thursday, August 27
These four wore us out!
“The Dragon” looked like the right size and speed of roller coaster for our crew.
I was a bit concerned that these two would want to get off half way through the ride because they were afraid. I did not have to worry!
It was a highlight of their evening.
They convinced us to let them fish for plastic sharks that were loitering around the bottom of this tank. The good thing was that they could fish until they caught one – and each person won a small prize.
Jesse wasn’t sure what to do with an ice cream cone.
Ian knew exactly what to do.
Jesse had fun gathering an egg from under the stuffed “chicken”, an apple from the wooden “apple tree”, and a potato from the sandbox “potato patch.”
We spent a lot of time waiting for the boys go get finished climbing on and over equipment.
I wonder how long they would have stayed in this area if we would have left them climb and play until they were finished.

It was a fun evening.
