Counted Cross Stitch Photos
Of Our Grandchildren
~~~
Several years ago (2000) I learned about a place where I could send photos and they would transfer them into a counted cross stitch pattern. I was so pleased with the first photo of our oldest granddaughter, that I began stitching a picture of each grandchild when they were between the ages of three and five.
Each of these is glass covered, so it was a challenge to photograph them.
Elijah lived only five months so I treasure this photo.
Because some of you asked about Elijah:
He is the son of Mark and Diane (from Maine) and was born with a heart deformity. I do not remember many of the details, and to tell everything about his short life would be quite lengthly.
Shortly after they brought him home from the hospital, Diane noticed that his feet and legs were cold and Mark thought he wasn’t breathing right, so they took him to the hospital where he was quickly transferred to Maine Medical in Portland. He was in a coma for many days, and not expected to live.
It was discovered that his heart had not developed properly and his aorta was not connected to the heart, thus he was not getting blood to his lower extremities. Experimental surgery was performed where a tiny tube was inserted to make the connection, and it worked fairly well.
Elijah came out of his coma and eventually went home, but he spent almost as much time in the hospital as out during the five months he lived. (He was at home five more days than he was in the hospital.) He died during surgery to repair his tiny life-giving tube.
The experience helped me to understand the great pain that grandparents go through when there is tragedy or heartbreak involving grandchildren. It is excruciating to watch your children go through something so painful. You hurt for them and you hurt for yourself.
There is another thing one learns from great pain and loss: God is faithful to comfort and guide our steps – if we keep walking.
I still have these three to do. Then I will have all seventeen finished.
These are not the photos I am stitching, but that would be a cute picture of Jesse. I have the patterns for Ian and Jared, but began stitching a photo of our house after finishing Gloria’s photo – because Ian was only two at the time. When photography became more of a hobby in 2005, I began doing less stitching. Because of our busy life, it takes me about a year to stitch a photo.
I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.
Saint Patricks & Rockefeller Center
Final Photo Journal of Our Day in NYC
Monday, November 29
By the time we returned to ground level – from The Top of the Rock – the sun had set and the city had taken on the look of nighttime.
We took advantage of visiting nearby Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.
There was a pretty nativity set to the left of the pulpit area.
The girls were fascinated by all the votive candles.
We told them that votive candles in a Catholic church are usually lit by individuals who enter the church and wish to indicate that they are praying for someone.
The streets were busy with evening traffic as we walked back to Rockefeller Center to go to Teuscher Chocolates.
My $8.00 purchase – two pieces for Cerwin and two for me. (I had already eaten my piece of dark chocolate/raspberry when I took these pictures.) Yum!
Rockefeller Center is beautiful at night.
We liked the snowflakes that were projected on the building across the street.
Gloria wanted a picture in front of the white Christmas tree.
Then, as our day in the city drew to a close, we walked several blocks to a TGI Friday’s for supper and on to the spot where the bus would pick us up at 7:00 p.m.
On the bus and heading home from our fun-filled day.
We decided to do this again next year and stay overnight.
God plays no favorites! It makes no difference who you are or where you’re from—if you want God and are ready to do as he says, the door is open.
Our Trip to NYC
More city views as the sun set
Times Square from the top
Photos from the other side of the building – with the setting sun at my back
Central Park
Lunchtime Atop a Skyscraper
This famous photo was taken when the building was under construction in 1932.
Can you imagine sitting on a beam, high above the city?
This one was on a black t-shirt in the gift shop
I know these girls wouldn’t have been sixty-nine stories above the city streets if there was only a steel beam.
I was on the seventieth floor when the sun set.
It was almost reverent up here during sunset.
There was a hush among those on the top of the building.
I have seen many beautiful paintings of sunrises and sunsets – but they never compare to God’s artwork.
When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves.
Our Trip to NYC
The GE Building is an Art Deco skyscraper that forms the centerpiece of Rockefeller Center in midtown Manhattan. It is most famous for housing the headquarters of the television network NBC.
We were only on the second floor at this point. From here we were directed to an elevator to the first observation deck on the sixty-seventh floor. I think the elevator trip took something like forty-three seconds. The observation decks are on floor 67, 69, and 70.
Oh, what a view from the seventieth floor.
This is the ninth tallest building in New York City and the thirty-third tallest in the United States.
The Empire State Building as the sun was setting
The Empire State Building has an observatory on the 86th Floor, but this is considered the best view of the city because on Top of the Rock there is a view of the Empire State Building – which cannot be seen from its own observation deck.
The 67th and 69th floor observation decks were surrounded by plexiglass, the 70th floor is open viewing.
Gloria with the Empire State Building in the background
The Statue of Liberty is in New York Harbor where the East and Hudson rivers converge.
I was surprised to see planes so close. It felt kind of strange, knowing what happened on 9-11.
The lighted area between the buildings is the screen on Times Square
Jana getting a closer look at the area. We could see the Chrysler Building, Times Square, Hudson River, East River, Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.
I can see why this is one of the best panoramic views of Manhattan.
More tomorrow night
For a child has been born—for us! the gift of a son—for us! He’ll take over the running of the world. His names will be: Amazing Counselor, Strong God, Eternal Father, Prince of Wholeness.
