Rescued Raccoons

5-22-12 Deb's Raccoons (1)

Last week Deb brought their newest babies to our house.

All babies

Just so you will know them apart in the next few pictures, Deb sent this picture.

Someone enjoyed watching these babies playing in their yard for a day or so, until they noticed they were getting weaker, and realized the dead raccoon on the road must be their mother.

They were almost dead from lack of food when they were brought to Deb and Roy. They spent the first evening carefully feeding them and bringing their body temperatures back to normal.

It is amazing to watch them now as healthy little critters.

Roy and Deb’s babies are always seen by a vet to make sure they stay healthy. They get all the shots and medications that cats and dogs receive.

If you wonder what happens to their rescued critters, mostly squirrels and raccoons (they had two miniature goat babies earlier this year), read the rest of the post to see what happened to Ricki and Rocki raccoon this past weekend.

They were brought to Roy and Deb early last summer when they were about four days old. They are now eleven months old.

Deb stays in contact with professional rescuers and learned that she will know when her animals are ready to be released.

Rocki & Roy

They began getting restless in their large cage a few weeks ago, so Roy and Deb knew it was time to take them back to their natural habitat.

 Eating

Deb was told to stay only fifteen minutes. By then they will would know if they will adapt to the woods.

 Playing

This is large, private property where they will be safe and can stay healthy – and the owner welcomes them.

Roy and Deb knew almost immediately that they were “home.”

~~~
On the other hand they released Alan the squirrel the other week – in their own yard – and at the first rainfall he came scampering back to the house and wanted to be brought inside.
He is still happy in his cage. They occasionally take him outside, but he always wants to come back inside.
It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life.
Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom.
Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows.
For everything we know about God’s Word is summed up in a single sentence:
Love others as you love yourself.
That’s an act of true freedom.
If you bite and ravage each other, watch out—in no time at all you will be annihilating each other, and where will your precious freedom be then?
Galatians 5:13-15 (The Message)
TFC Banquet
Northumberland, Pennsylvania
Saturday, May 19
5-19-12 Susq Banquet (3)
5-19-12 Susq Banquet (5)
This is one of our smallest banquets, but it is always enjoyable to meet with these faithful ministry supporters. Each spring we look forward to the beautiful two-hour drive – some of it along the Susquehanna River – and sharing a ministry update.
5-19-12 Susq Banquet (8)
We love getting to see some of our areas longest supporters – and some very new ones. Several years ago Rachel and Phil (left) came to know true freedom in Christ after Phil visited the TFC chapel near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Both were born into the Jewish faith, and have now become strong in their Christian faith. He told me on this night that he was recently invited to be a deacon in their church. That makes my heart smile.
While waiting for the meal to be served, these two had fun playing with toys their parents brought.
Nancy and Don are the contact people for the Susquehanna Chapter and faithfully oversee this banquet and six prayer breakfasts a year.
Beautiful music by Suzanne and Clara
5-19-12 Susq Banquet (25)
Inge (standing) shared her interesting life-journey – from when her mother wanted to abort her, to her miraculous journey from her birth country of Brazil to becoming an American citizen. Many told us they could have listened to her a lot longer. Chaplain Jim Smalley who serves at the Open Door Chapel, Frystown, Pennsylvania, is seated to Inge’s left.
5-19-12 Susq Banquet (29)
On the way home we came upon this breathtaking scene after we drove out of a mountainous area to cross a bridge. When Cerwin hears me saying, “Oh, oh, look!”, he knows it’s time to stop the car if possible.
.
5-19-12 Susq Banquet (34)
The sky remained beautiful for several more minutes before darkness arrived.
5-19-12 Susq Banquet (35)
We were delighted to have Inge with us and hear more details of her life-story as we traveled home. She works with me more closely than anyone else in the ministry, and is indeed a true and faithful friend.
An Interesting Hair Cut – Today – After Supper
1 (1)
Last Friday evening (May 18), Cerwin told me to get my camera, because Nate was giving Justin a hair cut on our patio.
I was in the middle of doing something in the office, so asked him to take pictures.
1 (2)
Nate are you sure this is the kind of hair cut Justin wants?
1 (3)
When I saw him, I asked, “Justin, what are you doing?” He said this was for a softball game the next day.
1 (4)
These pictures are from Keziah Heisey’s FaceBook (with her permission). Thank you!
1 (5)
He not only has a mohawk, he sprayed it green.
1 (6)
1 (7)
When he was here the next day (enjoying the man cave with our grandsons and friends) he was totally shaved. He said he didn’t want to go to church like that.
Today
2
Today we helped to clean out another house. This time for another son and daughter-in-law – Jere and Kristen.
We were going to help Jeff and Chris this afternoon, but they are a place today where they didn’t need extra help in getting ready for their auction here (and Jeff needed to work in their hayfield), so we stayed with Jere and Kristen.
The owner of this house, Elwood, is a ninety-two year old friend of theirs. Jere and Kristen have been assisting him and his handicapped son (in his sixties) since Elwood’s wife died several years ago when their car lit on fire while they were driving. Greg (son) is in assisted living in a group home and Elwood recently moved to an elder care facility. It is Jere and Kristen’s responsibility to clean out the house, prepare the items for auction, and eventually fix up the house for sale or rent. (More photos in another post.)
3 (5)
On the way home we stopped at a roadside stand, for local strawberries, but they were sold out so we settled for new potatoes (not local), sugar peas (local), and strawberry shortcake (homemade by the stand owner) – hoping to find strawberries at another place.
3 (1)
We saw strawberries here as we drove by, and quickly stopped and backed up. I love these little stands.
3 (2)
3 (3)
Notice the note on the bottom left. I love living in an area where people are trusted. We put $3.50 in the blue box and headed home – without seeing anyone at this stand.
3 (4)
I tipped the sugar peas and started cooking a few potatoes (no meat tonight). There are enough of both for Sunday lunch.
3 (6)
The shortcake was perfect with the delicious (picked today) strawberries and a bit of vanilla ice cream.
3 (7)
Oh, yum!
After Supper
3 (9)
A pretty catbird waiting for me to refill the feeders.
3 (8)
3 (10)
The brown-headed cowbird looks like he is hungry too.
3 (11)
I think the downy woodpecker was watching too, because I had barely walked away from filling the log holes with suet when she arrived.
I will fill the other feeders tomorrow because we had a chance of severe thunderstorms, wind, and hail until 8:30 tonight. There is still some seed in the bigger feeders and on the ground – they won’t starve.
The storm bypassed us, but we could hear thunder rumbling in the area.
