I Love the Sights and Sounds of Spring
As I was walking around our yard the other day checking for signs of spring, I hear a Cardinal calling – then located him at the top of one of our tall trees.
I repeat ~ I love the sights and sounds of spring!

The Iditarod
Seventy-seven have finished.
One is still on the trail.
Eighteen have scratched.
UPDATE: Tuesday morning.
Deborah Bicknell (the only one on the trail last night) age 62, finished at 8:36:13 p.m. Alaska time, and wins the Red Lantern Award.
Red Lantern Award: Seems to have come from a tradition of putting a lamp at cabins to help mushers find a destination during storms, and has become a symbol of the Iditarod.
A lamp is lit at the finish line when the race begins and extinguished when the last runner comes in.
Congratulations to each musher who finished.

The Last Edition of Our Trip to Alaska
Day 17 – August 9, 2003
The Era helicopter that took us to see Mt. McKinley.
We saw a variety of landscape scenes during our trip through the foothills of the highest mountain in North America.
One thing I learned on this trip, is that glaciers are not always pretty, because as ice and snow travels down a mountain, they gather dirt and stones.
Several times the pilot took us close to a wall of snow and ice.
Words cannot describe the beauty of flying in this area.
The top.
There was snow everywhere we looked.
We were surrounded by snow – even when we looked up through the window in the roof.
We saw all this as we listened to classical music and occasional commentary from the pilot.
At this point the pilot told us the glacier was 1,000 feet deep.
I couldn’t believe I was here in person, observing this beauty. At one point tears were streaming down my face. I was so overwhelmed.
I so wanted to stay longer!
However, our half-hour trip to the mountain was over.
~~~
From McKinley we headed toward Anchorage.
Our last stop was Iditarod Headquarters – which is where, and why, I began my posts on Alaska – because I love following the Iditarod.
This is my last photo of Alaska for another reason – when getting back into the motorhome after this stop, I tripped and dropped my camera – breaking it.
It was truly a vacation of a lifetime.
but keep them safe from the evil one.
Memories of our trip to Alaska
Day Sixteen – August 8, 2003
We had seen everything we had hoped to see, and more – at least things that were accessable by motorhome – except Mt. McKinley. (It was cloudy and rainy when we were in that area on Day One and Day Two of our trip.)
The weather was supposed to be beautiful during the next two days, so we retraced our steps from Anchorage to McKinley.
We were delighted with our first view of THE MOUNTAIN.
We drove for miles, taking advantage of every view of the gigantic hill. In the early part of our trip we talked about going on a helicopter ride to see it even closer, but gave up on that idea when it was covered with clouds. Now that we had extra time, we revived that idea.
The Mile Post told us there was a place to get helicopter rides at a certain mile post, but all we could find was what looked like a private lodge .
It was called Mt. McKinley Princess Lodge (Princess Tours).
We were unsure about parking the motorhome in their lot, but figured the worst they can do is ask us to leave.
When coming in the driveway, I noticed this beautiful deck, so we asked the hostess if we could have tea on the deck – to enjoy the view of the mountain. We also informed her that we were not with Princess Tours, but had a motorhome in the parking lot. She said that was not a problem.
This was my favorite photo of McKinley that day.
After finishing our tea, we walked around the lodge, to check if there was anything else to do there.
WE FOUND THE HELICOPTER DESK!
We told them we had trouble locating them. He said at this particular location they can not put an advertisement along the road because they are working with Princess Tours.
He said there needed to be at least four people for them to take the helicopter out to McKinley, and thought someone would probably sign up for the next morning because more than a dozen buses would be arriving that night.
We signed up, then noticed a film would soon be showing in one of the conference rooms. It was by Leroy Zimmerman (the same man who produced the Northern Lights film we saw at Ester). This one was called Sounds of the Land and was excellent.
Pretty Daisies on the grounds.
Since we were hoping to take a helicopter ride in the morning, we were permitted to keep our camper there. We spent the evening walking around the beautiful grounds, sitting in the camper watching buses arrive and hundreds of tourists unloading, and hoping to hear from Era Helicopter. At 8:00 the helicopter representative came to tell us another couple had signed up for ten o’clock in the morning.
We could hardly sleep that night – for more than one reason. The sun was still shining in our camper window at 11:00!
Today in Our World
March 16, 2008
~~~
As we were getting ready for church, we noticed Amish buggies coming back our road, which means one of our Amish neighbors was hosting church at their house this morning.
We have only a few Amish families in our valley, so only see this activity once or twice a year.
We saw about ten buggies going by our house. Probably the same amount or more came from the other direction.
While waiting for more buggies, I enjoyed watching this Tufted Titmouse.
In the early afternoon, I again heard the clip-clop of horses hooves.
This family had the back window open.
About the time I took this picture, I noticed the buggy stop and pull off the road …
…then make a u-turn. They probably forgot something.
I love our quiet, farming neighborhood.
Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.

Memories from our 2003 trip to Alaska
We had free air miles, which made it possible for us to do some really neat things while traveling in the motorhome we rented in Anchorage.
Day 15 – August 7
While in Seward we visited Alaska Sealife Center and learned more about some of the creatures we had seen in recent days.
Halibut are flat, bottom feeders. Both of their eyes are on top of their head.
Harbor Seals were so much fun. It seemed they knew we were watching them.
Woody the Steller Sea Lion.
My notes tell me he weighed 1,760 pounds.
The Puffins were my favorite.
~~~
Our next stop was Big Game Alaska, where it was easy to see the effects of the 1964 earthquake.
Notice the petrified trees behind the bison.
Big Game Alaska is a refuge for Alaskan animals.
This baby moose had been rescued a few weeks before we got there. Officials suspect its mother died.
There is also a nice herd of elk on the refuge.
Berrie the Bear
~~~
After leaving the refuge, we headed back to Anchorage, where we would decide how to spend our last full day in Alaska.
~~~
We were just south of Anchorage when we noticed several parked cars and people on the road. They were watching this goat looking for salt on the road.
It was amazing to watch her climbing rocks – which is home territory for her.
Today at our house.
The boys when home this afternoon.
Now I can put paper back in my cabinet.
They loved using this for a fort when I was working in the office. What fun to spend a week making memories.
We only had Jesse for two days, and since he wasn’t feeling real great, I am using a picture our daughter Deb took while he was there. He was running a fever yesterday, and slept a lot, or wanted rocked, so it wasn’t a great time to take pictures. Thanks to medication, he seemed to feel much better today.
Jere, Kristen, Josh, and Jana had a great time in Texas.
Alaska Memories – Day 14
The cruise ship in Seward’s harbor made the fishing boats look tiny in comparison.
The captain and his assistant had the boat ready when we arrived.
The captain (green hat) was a great guide and his assistant always baited our large hooks and removed the Halibut.
Cerwin waiting for a bite.
There were three other people fishing with us, an airline pilot (above), his daughter, and one of her friends. The two girls were seasick most of the day.
Our boat’s Halibut catch. Guess who caught the large one?
It weighed in at seventy pounds, and Cerwin had to help me pull it in. He caught the forty-five-pound one to its right. I also caught the thirty-pound one to its left. The others were caught by the pilot, his daughter, or her friend. We were limited to three per person.
Don’t you like my cool hat? By the end of the day, my hair was so undone that I was not about to remove the hat for pictures .
Another great day in Alaska.
Happenings at our place today – March 14
Three brothers in bed this morning.
Our daughter, Deb, brought Jesse last night, because she had some business meetings today. Their dad, mom, brother Josh, and sister Jana will be home from Texas tomorrow.
Deb brought a large puzzle for us to keep here for grandchildren.
Jared and Ian had fun putting it together this morning.
All finished!
Ian eating a cupcake from Aunt Deb
Jared was glad to see Grandpa when he got home from the TFC office.
