Our Trip Home

Day 19 – Saturday

Howe, IN, to HOME!

2.JPG

The rain followed us through Indiana and Ohio.

2 (1).JPG

It was good to see this sign – after nineteen days on the road.

2 (2).JPG

It was even better to see the scenery of my favorite state.

2 (3).JPG

 2 (4).JPG

Lunchtime was our last visit to a truck stop.

2 (5).JPG

Then we were on the road to enjoy more Pennsylvania scenery.

2 (6).JPG

2 (7).JPG

When we were in the west, Cerwin asked if we have such pretty skies.  I said we did, but we have to look at the sky through mountains, hills, and trees.

2 (8).JPG

Penn State – only two-and-a-half hours to home.

2 (9).JPG

 Yay for our loyal Penn State Fans!

2 (10).JPG

I don’t think our trees were this green when we left home.

2 (11).JPG

2 (12).JPG

We also have beautiful rock formations.

2 (13).JPG

The Susquehanna River

2 (15).JPG

5,902 miles later we are back in Marietta – safely – with one chapel delivered and another trailer ready for construction.

2 (14).JPG

I could not stop looking at the beautiful, flowering trees on the nineteen-mile drive home from the office.

~~~
We called our two daughters to let them know we were home (one lives ten hours away, the other lives one hour away), and stopped to visit our two sons and their families.  It seemed like a long time since we had seen them.
~~~

2 (16).JPG

 Just one more hill – and we were home!

~~~
Cerwin and I are overwhelmed by your concern, prayers – and God’s protection.
~~~

PS:  The rain did follow us home.  We were not home very long before a thunderstorm came through this area.

Our Trip Home

Day 18 – Friday

Tomah, WI, to Howe, IN

1.JPG

 We woke up to rain – and heavy rain was the order of the morning as we headed northeast toward Racine, WI.

1 (1).JPG

 Sometimes the wind and rain made the road barely visable.  Because we stopped before the worst part of the snow storm in South Dakota earlier in the month, this was the most difficult part of our travels – so far.

1 (2).JPG

 At one point we heard on the CB that there was a policeman on the left side of the road picking up debris.  His is the front vehicle.

Shortly after this picture, we noticed a tractor trailer on the side of the road, with some of the debris impaled on the front of the truck.

1 (3).JPG

 Because we were changing routes a few times as we traveled around Milwaukee, I was the keeper of the map, and Cerwin’s assistant in looking for exit signs – which were often difficult to see.

1 (4).JPG

I’m not sure what happened to this lady’s car – but she had slammed against the middle barrier and was headed the wrong direction.

1 (5).JPG

 Just minutes before arriving at Petro Travel Center near Racine, the sky began to clear.   (The trip that should have taken three-and-a-half hours, took almost four.)

1 (6).JPG

 Volunteer Chaplain Tim, and Ellen and Doug Kraus (TFC Director of Location Development) were waiting for us.  The counter above is the area they are currently using for ministry in the truck stop.

1 (7).JPG

 Doug, a truck stop manager (I forget his name), and Tim.  If I was ministering at a truck stop, I would like this manager overseeing something.  He is a vibrant Christian, and lots of fun.

1 (8).JPG

 This is where the next TFC chapel will be placed – right where the orange truck is parked.

1 (9).JPG

 Cerwin, Doug, and Tim discuss the electric hookup.

1 (10).JPG

 Discussing where doors, windows, and lighted crosses will be placed.

After lunch, we went to the church where the donated trailer is parked.

1 (11).JPG

Finally – I get to see Holstein cows – my favorite bovines.

I grew up on a  dairy farm, and have lived next to it for most of our married life.  This herd was next to the entrance of the church.

1 (12).JPG

 There it is!  The next chapel for TFC.

This will be one of the largest we have in our fleet – 53′ x 102″.  Cerwin and Doug think the Ontario, California, chapel is the same size.  The one we took to Chilliwack was 48′ x 102″.  That is usually the size Cerwin looks for in donated trailers.

1 (13).JPG

 Cerwin preparing to back under the trailer.

1 (14).JPG

 Doug and Tim attaching TFC mudflaps.

1 (15).JPG

 Cerwin checking out the interior.

1 (16).JPG

 Doug and Tim attaching a sign to the back of the trailer.

1 (17).JPG

What a great idea!  I love creative people.

1 (18).JPG

 Prayer before we left.

 (I prayed too – this was a reenactment.  “Keep the pose.  Look serious.”)

1 (19).JPG

 The cows kept an eye on us as we pulled out of the parking lot.

1 (20).JPG

 The rain was over, but we continued to see its remnants in low-lying areas.

1 (21).JPG

1 (22).JPG

 There were miles and miles of road construction to the west and south sides of Chicago.

1 (23).JPG

1 (24).JPG

1 (25).JPG

 We began seeing lots of triple rigs again.  There were some in the west, but there we seemed to see more long doubles.

1 (26).JPG

 We’ve seen some strange loads – and this is one of them.  Some of the longest and most unusual loads (which I was never able to photograph) were when a truck was carrying one blade (propeller) of the huge windmills that create electricity.

~~~
Our bodies are so confused with this time thing!
(I am entering this on Saturday morning.)
I had difficulty falling asleep last night – and it wasn’t because of the drone of truck engines, or the noisy refer parked just a few yards from my feet.  We went to bed at a reasonable time – 9:30 p.m. – but yesterday at this time, it was 8:30, the day before that it was 7:30, and a few days before that it was 6:30 p.m.
This morning the alarm went off at 5:00 a.m., but my body wasn’t sure if it was 4:00, 3:00, or maybe even 2:00 a.m.  And I am a morning person!  “Okay, I said to my body, get out of bed, drink a cup of coffee, and adjust to Eastern Standard Time again!”
Our Trip Home
Day 17 – Thursday
Mitchell, SD, to Tomah, WI
1.JPG
Our “front window” displayed heavy rain when we woke in the cab of the truck this morning.
1 (4).JPG
Cerwin knew this truck stop had a garage (from being snowed-in here the other week), and decided to ask if they could lubricate the truck this morning.  They opened at 7:00 a.m. and took us in right away.  Cerwin was impressed with their professionalism.
1 (1).JPG
While I waited in the truck, the men noticed a rainbow, and got my attention.  If you look closely, you can see a double bow in this picture.
1 (2).JPG
1 (3).JPG
1 (5).JPG
The rainbow, however, did not cause the rain to cease.  The entire day was cool and rainy.
1 (6).JPG
We had breakfast at the Sioux Falls, SD, truck stop where TFC has a chapel.  We were too early to meet the chaplain on duty today.
1 (7).JPG
1 (8).JPG
I enjoyed seeing this truckload of little piggies – many trying to look out between the slats of the trailer.
1 (9).JPG
One thing we quickly learned, was that when we saw a grouping of trees, we would soon see buildings.
1 (10).JPG
Trees protect the buildings from the harsh winter winds.
1 (12).JPG
The landscape of pretty farms is starting to look a bit more like home.
1 (13).JPG
The landscape even resembles Pennsylvania.
1 (14).JPG
1 (15).JPG
1 (16).JPG
1 (17).JPG
The older I get, the more I appreciate wetlands.
1 (21).JPG
Even though this photo is not in focus, I wanted to include this farmer who was using horsepower.  It reminded me of home.
1 (22).JPG
The highlight of my day happened when we enjoyed a meal and lots of conversation with www.xanga.com/auntvina.  It was the first time we ever met, but I think we could have talked all day.
1 (23).JPG
Thanks, Lavina, for taking time to come to town.
1 (18).JPG
Beautiful, Wisconsin farmland
1 (19).JPG
1 (20).JPG
It was another great day on the road.
Our Trip Home
Day 16 – Wednesday
Mt. Rushmore to Mitchell, SD
4-23-08 Mt Rushmore to Mitchell, SD
This picture gives you a perspective of how close our motel was to Mt. Rushmore – less than a mile.  The presidents are on the other side of the rocks on the upper left.
This welcoming fellow was in the motel parking lot.
~~~

It was one of the more leisurely days of this trip, as we don’t have to be in Wisconsin until Friday.  We slept late, and felt refreshed when we left the motel at 10:00 a.m.

Catching up on sleep will help our bodies adjust to traveling in so many time zones in the past two weeks – Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific – then back again.  We were in Central time by the end of today.

4-23-08 Mt Rushmore to Mitchell, SD (4)

A forest of dead trees.

4-23-08 Mt Rushmore to Mitchell, SD (5)

A forsaken building that probably has many stories it could tell.  Sometimes these buildings were all that we saw – except pretty landscape – for miles.

 I wonder…

This sign will make more sense after I tell you the story about Wall Drug.

4-23-08 Mt Rushmore to Mitchell, SD (9)

Since this was our vacation day, we decided to stop and see why there were so many road signs encouraging us to stop at Wall Drug.

~~~
I love this story!
It was December 1931 when Ted Husted and his wife, Dorothy, bought the only drug store in Wall, SD.  Business was slow and things didn’t look very encouraging for the first four-and-a-half years.  Then one hot summer day Dorothy had an idea on how to get people to come to their store from Route 16A.
She suggested that they put signs out along the road offering free ice water.  Ted liked the idea, and made several signs.  People began stopping – even before he had all the signs up!
Today there are 20,000 visitors a day to Wall Drug during the height of tourist season.  (Another reason I was glad to be at a tourist stop during the off season.)
If you want to read the entire story of Wall Drug, go to www.walldrug.com.  Then click on history.   It is a worthwhile read.
 4-23-08 Mt Rushmore to Mitchell, SD (12)
 Cerwin was more concerned about the next stop – a D.O.T. check.  Truckers are always apprehensive about these.  The officer looked at the signs on our door and asked if we were just traveling through.  When Cerwin said, “Yes.”  He said, “Have a good day.”
 4-23-08 Mt Rushmore to Mitchell, SD (13)
We traveled on the fringes of the Badlands in the middle of the day.
 More abandoned buildings.  I wonder…
 4-23-08 Mt Rushmore to Mitchell, SD (18)
And the highway goes on and on…
A pretty sky.
4-23-08 Mt Rushmore to Mitchell, SD (21)
We saw lots of farmers working the fields in eastern South Dakota.  Some were there a little too soon, because their equipment had gotten stuck in the mud.
4-23-08 Mt Rushmore to Mitchell, SD (22)
It was a beautiful evening in Mitchell, South Dakota – perfect for taking pictures at the Corn Palace.
4-23-08 Mt Rushmore to Mitchell, SD (23)
The original palace was built in 1892.  This is the third.  The interior is a sports arena.
Early settlers displayed the fruits of their labor on the exterior of the building to show that South Dakota soil was fertile.
A different theme and murals are used each year.
The artists use thousands of bushels of corn, grain, grasses, wild oats, brome grass, blue grass, rye, straw, and wheat each year.
4-23-08 Mt Rushmore to Mitchell, SD (28)
Just after parking in the Palace parking lot, a vehicle drove toward  us.  The lady, rolled down her window and said she noticed our truck in town and just wanted to tell us she appreciated the lettering, and especially the cross on the front.
Since we could only find one restaurant open last night (a pizza and sub place), Cerwin hadn’t gotten the steak meal he had hoped for on his birthday.  He asked if there were any steakhouses in town.
She recommended Steak “N” More.  That was one of the best steaks we have ever eaten – and the ice cream cheese cake was fabulous.  THANKS for the great recommendation.
www.xanga.com/schweschwe I thought of you when we were eating supper, because the name of the store across the mall from us was Schweser’s.
4-23-08 Mt Rushmore to Mitchell, SD (29)
 Guess where we stopped for the night?  The same truck stop where we were snowed-in the other week!
Our Trip Home
Day 15 – Tuesday
Missoula, MT, to Mount Rushmore, SD
MT to SD.JPG
We were on the road at 5:00 a.m. and approaching the Continental Divide at daylight.
MT to SD (1).JPG
Sunrise doesn’t get any prettier than in the Rockies.
MT to SD (2).JPG
MT to SD (3).JPG
MT to SD (4).JPG
We enjoyed watching the truck’s outside thermometer go from 22 degrees to a low of 8.8 degrees!  I don’t think I ever watched a thermometer drop so fast.
MT to SD (5).JPG
Cerwin got lots of calls today, since it was his birthday.
MT to SD (6).JPG
We traveled on Interstate after Interstate like this today – where the road could be seen going on and on in the distance.
MT to SD (7).JPG
We saw lots of interesting rock formations and land designs.
MT to SD (8).JPG
MT to SD (9).JPG
MT to SD (10).JPG
MT to SD (11).JPG
There were lots of cattle in the fields and on the hillsides.
MT to SD (12).JPG
MT to SD (13).JPG
I think a lot of calves were born since we went this way a week and a half ago.  The fields were full of the little guys.
MT to SD (15).JPG
There were many interesting farms and ranches scattered across the countryside.
MT to SD (16).JPG
I often tried to imagine who may have lived in some of these old, abandoned buildings.
MT to SD (17).JPG
MT to SD (14).JPG
We enjoyed seeing lots of antelope as we traveled through eastern Wyoming and western South Dakota.
MT to SD (18).JPG
MT to SD (19).JPG
We only saw a few mule deer during this trip, and I was not able to photograph the ones we did see, but that changed when we stopped at Mount Rushmore late today.
~~~

We had decided ahead of time that we would take a personal break by visiting Mount Rushmore, which I had never seen, and Cerwin hadn’t seen since 1961.

~~~
MT to SD (20).JPG
We saw several mule deer along the road as we ascended the hill to see the presidents.
MT to SD (21).JPG
An awesome site!
MT to SD (22).JPG
There were more mule deer along the road as we traveled down the hill.
MT to SD (23).JPG
MT to SD (24).JPG
After getting a motel room and supper, a herd of mule deer were feeding in the yard across the road.
MT to SD (25).JPG
There are more mule deer than people in the town below Mount Rushmore, as the season only opens next week.  It was nice to be here on a beautiful evening in the off season.  It is about sixty degrees this evening.
Most restaurants and motels are closed, but we only needed one meal and one motel room.  We are just a short distance from the presidents, in Keystone, SD.  Most of the people in town are here in preparation for the opening of the season next week.
MT to SD (26).JPG
Cerwin took time to clean the truck wheels – just outside our motel room.
