Helpers at the TFC Office
Yesterday ten students, a teacher, and two chaperons arrived by school bus at 8:45 a.m. to work at TFC’s International Office and Shop.
Cerwin didn’t take a picture of every project they completed, but I thought he did a pretty good job. ![]()
They cleaned shop windows…
…and office windows.
They swept, vacummed, and washed floors in the shop and office. They emptied trash, cleaned bathrooms, carried boxes of old files to a storage trailer, and weeded flower beds.
They finished everything, and had time left before the bus returned, so Cerwin provided supplies for washing and waxing one of the old tractors.
This tractor was originally placed with the chapel at our Connecticut location, however, when ownership changed, the chapel had to be moved.
From there it went to Canaan, New York, however, we could not find a staff person to man it on a regular basis, so the chapel was transferred to Canada and the tractor came back to the shop.
Tractors used to be necessary for storing heating fuel for chapels, however, we now use electric, so most chapels do not need a tractor. When the truck stop has space, and a tractor is available, it makes a chapel look like a complete rig.
These guys did a fabulous job of cleaning and polishing our 1973 Peterbilt.
Now it’s ready for its next assignment.
Director of Chaplains, Bunny O’Hare (left), says goodbye as they board the school bus at 2:20 p.m.
Cerwin says, “Fantastic job!”
Previous to me there was no such thing as a god,
nor will there be after me.

Chocolate Cake & Comedy
After church on Sunday morning, the girls made Chocolate Mug Cake for dessert.
Thanks for the recipe Cordy, it was delicious. The chocolate chips made it especially good. Gloria is missing because she is too young to go to the evening program for which we have tickets. She went home with her parents following Sunday school and church.
Chocolate Mug Cake
1 Coffee mug – Make sure it is microwaveable and fairly large.
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons baking cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips – Optional, but they add moisture.
A splash of vanilla extract
Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well
Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug (the reason you need a fairly large mug) but don’t worry!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.

Sunday Evening Laughter
We left the Memorial Service just before the conclusion, to pick up our grandson, Josh, then drove to Petra Christian Fellowship near New Holland.
Josh
We arrived at Petra about an hour and a quarter before the program began, and found good seats – about six rows from the front. The first five rows were reserved.
Talk about extremes. We went from a memorial service to A Night of Comedy.
Just before the program began, I noticed that ushers were looking for fill-ins for the front rows, so told an usher that we had three granddaughters who would enjoy sitting up front if he needed someone to move forward. This was a DVD taping – the reason it was good for front row seats to be filled.
“Ask and you shall receive!” They were given seats in the front row.
We could not take photos after the program started, so I will use photos from one of the evening’s ads.
Tim Lovelace was first on the program. He does a great job of mixing silly songs with great stories.
Ryan is a talented ventriloquist, who brings lots of laughter by telling stories with his main dummy, Jeffrey. Grandpa and Grandma are a smaller part of his program.
I am encouraged that Ryan includes a clear gospel message in his presentations. Most impressive is his analogy and demonstration of how empty and motionless Jeffrey is without the help of a human hand – comparing it to our helplessness without the hand of God.
Aaron Wilburn is another great, Christian comedian who brings lots of laughter with his humorous stories.
~~~
The grand finale brought the house down when Ryan used Aaron, Tim, and a lady from the audience as human dummies. He gave Tim a lady’s voice; the lady was given a deep, man’s voice; and Aaron was a baby who mostly cried.
I’ve seen Ryan do this several times, but this finale was the best ever!
In Memory of Missionary Pilot Dave Clapper
Those who read my site on a regular basis will remember when our missionary friend was killed in a plane crash in early August. You can read the story here.
A memorial service was held at our church on Sunday afternoon.
A tent was set up in our church yard to encourage guests to stay and visit following the service. They were expecting more than our fellowship hall could hold.
When we saw gladiolus under the carport entrance, we knew they came from Beth’s mother who raises them by the hundreds. Guests were encouraged to take one home following the service.
My next stop was the fellowship hall where bagged meals were being prepared. It was Beth’s (Dave’s widow) desire that every person who attended the service would receive a meal in this form.
I promised Beth that I would take photos of some of the details of the day.
C on a bag meant it contained a chicken salad sandwich.
H meant ham and cheese.
The contents of one bag.
Juice, chips, apple (or banana), sandwich, and cookies.
Some of the ladies posed for a “cleaning up” photo.
Martha Martin was the meal coordinator. She told me they served about 625 people.
Early guests arriving in the Narthex of the church.
Programs and memorial cards.
Beth, Dave’s widow, carrying a vase of her mother’s glads.
As you read this blog, you will see that this young widow and her family are surely allowing God ‘s strength to fill their lives.
Dave and Beth’s oldest son, Judah, and Ron (Beth’s minister cousin) discuss last minute details before the service.
Dave’s family. I understand three of his sisters were there, and I think all three are in this photo.
Three of Beth’s sisters (Mary in burgundy, Deb in green, and Marcy – sitting on the right).
The family preparing to enter the sanctuary. Beth’s oldest sister Becky is on the left, followed by her mother, Mary Kathryn. Pete, Beth’s dad is second from the right in the foreground. I wish I had time to get a good photo of each of the family members.
Dave’s mother could not be there due to surgery. I understand his dad came later, but we did not see him.
Beth and her children entering the sanctuary, followed by her parents and siblings.
Our moderating minister, Marv Shenk, opened the service. Other ministers who participated: Wilmer Horst, Ron Copenhaver, Mark Bucher, Aaron Beiler, and Sam Cassel. There was a prerecorded song by Jeryl Metzler – Others.
Beth and her children listen from the front bench.
There was an interesting PowerPoint presentation which was helpful for those of us on this side of the world. We saw the crash site and the people who helped place his body in a plane.
A photo of his casket in its burial place.
Judah, Tirzah, and several of their friends sang, I Will Praise You in the Storm. Beth signified with upraised arms that she WILL praise the Lord in this storm.
Beth’s testimony will remain in my memory for a long time.
She gave amazing challenges concerning four items that were found at the crash site – and returned to her:
Judah shared some of his dad’s favorite scriptures.
~~~
We had conflicting appointments, and could not stay to get photos of the visitation and meal.
~~~
Beth and the girls are planning to leave the states on October 22, and return to Wamena, Indonesia. Judah will remain in the states as he seeks God’s will for the next step in his life.
Saturday Night’s TFC Banquet
Country & Town Baptist Church, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania
Howard Moses, TFC Director of Chaplain Care, used the back of his van to direct banquet attendees to the fellowship hall. When Cerwin saw it, he thought the sign needed extra “help” and drew an arrow in the dust on the window! ![]()
We arrived early, so our granddaughters entertained themselves on the swings. I wanted plenty of time to set up my laptop and projector in order to add photos and PowerPoints for those doing presentations.
Gloria, Jana, Jenna, and Diana
The TFC staff who were in charge of this banquet (Howard & Angie Moses, and Richard & Janette Guy) designed beautiful centerpieces.
The homemade shoofly pies looked very inviting. Mine (the slice I ate) was one of the best shoofly pies I have ever tasted.
Someone also decorated a cake for the occasion.
The evening opened with bluegrass gospel music by the Dietrich Brothers from Shiremanstown, Pennsylvania. The youngest brother helped with a few of the early songs, but I failed to get his name.
Alex and Kenny are skilled musicians.
Seventeen-year-old Alex plays banjo while Kenny (age thirteen) plays guitar and sings lead.
Richard Guy (Lead Chaplain at All American Travel Plaza, Frystown, Pennsylvania), and Howard Moses (Director of Chaplain Care) look on as Bunny O’Hare (Director of Chaplains) prepares for the invocation. Howard and Richard later provided interesting information on their part of sharing the gospel with truckers.
Enjoying the evening meal in the church fellowship hall.
Therese McFadden (background) helped coordinate the banquet, and in this photo is giving directions to several homeschool servers.
We were blessed by their willingness and dedication to serving us.
Alfred McFadden, over-the-road driver for NAPA Transportation, told the audience what TFC means to him.
He also talked about a truck accident he came upon a few days earlier. The truck was upside down on the guardrail.
Angie Moses (Administrative Assistant to Office of Chaplains) shared about her involvement with TFC, as her husband listens.
Stephen Weber http://www.dailyencouragement.net provided information on how he and his website are involved with TFC.
Prior to coffee and dessert, Driver/Chaplain David Nispel, gave a few comments before concluding with prayer.
To our delight Alex and Kenny provided “Dessert Music.”
Alex is a skilled banjo player.
Thirteen-year-old Kenny has a fabulous voice.
Another homeschooler serving dessert
To close the evening, the boys invited a friend to help them sing Rocky Top. I think Howard and Angie had something to do with that song since they “hail” from Tennessee!
It was a delightful evening.
The Lord is faithful;
he will strengthen you
and guard you from the evil one
Saturday With the Girls
We got to Chuck E Cheese’s shortly after they opened at 9:00 a.m. – before it got busy and noisy.
Gloria on a trip around the clock.
Jana taking a gentle ride on the horse.
Gloria jumped and pounded as hard as she could in an effort to get as many balls as possible in the dog’s mouth.
Diana riding the horse.
Jana tries to hold on to the vibrating hand grips of this menacing monster as Jenna looks on.
A photo in front of a Chuck E Cheese poster.
I had a $20.00 coupon for Build-a-Bear and told each girl to choose something. Diana had extra birthday money and stuffed a dog.
We checked if the nail salon had time to take care of five sets of nails. The girls were excited to have nice nails for the evening’s banquet. The fifth set was taking the photo. The lady who did Gloria’s nails, painted a cute flower on one nail.
I repeat. It is fun to have a girly weekend.
~~~
By the way, Cerwin was glad to escape the girliness and go archery hunting. He saw a few deer, but none came close enough for an arrow. Smart deer!
Keep your eyes on Jesus,
who both began and finished this race we’re in.
Study how he did it.
