He Who lives in you is greater (mightier) than he who is in the world.

1 John 4:4 (Amplified Bible)

~~~
Father, I praise You that Jesus is Victor over Satan
and all his evil powers.
I praise You that He who is in me
is greater than he who is in the world
that Satan cannot prevail
against the blood of the Lamb and the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
It is a great source of strength to know
that You have won the victory over evil
that no matter how powerful the attack of Satan
in my life
I do not have to run
or be fearful
(when I am being obedient to Your will)
but I can stand firm
because Satan must retreat before Your Name
and Your Word.
Monday Afternoon & Evening
Comox to Victoria
Monday.JPG
We began seeing eagles soon after driving off the ferry at Comox.  We would have liked to see some a bit closer, but had to settle for seeing them in tree tops or soaring in the air.
Monday (1).JPG
This Golden Eagle may have been migrating.  Darlene recently heard/read they spread their wings like this to cool down after flying long distances.
We probably saw three dozen eagles during our time on the island.
Monday (2).JPG
Because we were driving along the eastern coast, we saw lots of things pertaining to the sea.
Monday (3).JPG
Monday (4).JPG
When posting this picture, I noticed the bird on the pole in the center right, and decided to crop it to see if I could tell what it was.
Monday (5).JPG
I think it looks like a kingfisher.  What do you think?
Monday (6).jpg
A kingfisher photo from the Internet.
Monday (7).JPG
This old post office is a landmark in Union Bay.
Monday (8).JPG
We took a short walk-around at this oyster-processing plant.
Monday (9).JPG
There were oyster shells everywhere.
Monday (10).JPG
Since this boat is parked here, I expect it is used for oystering.
Monday (11).JPG
This one was docked even closer to shore.  Notice all the oyster shells in the water.
Monday (12).JPG
Monday (13).JPG
Monday (14).JPG
Internet information:  Oysters grow only in areas where salt and fresh water mix together, like salt marshes.  Oysters are born as free-swimming plankton (tiny microscopic organisms).   When they grow up, they find a place (on mud, coral, trash, or other oyster shells) to attach and grow.
Once they grow their shells, they can’t move around anymore.  When the tide is high, oysters are covered by water, but when the tide goes out, they are left sticking up into the dry air.  Their shells close tightly together so the animal inside will not dehydrate (dry out) before the tide comes back in.
Monday (15).JPG
Monday (16).JPG
A short distance later we stopped to photograph this Great Blue Heron – but it did not want to be photographed.
Monday (17).JPG
Our next stop was Ashcroft House – our bed and breakfast in Victoria.
Monday (18).JPG
Paulanne gave us a short orientation to the house, and advice on where to go for dinner.  We knew from the moment we met her that we were going to be pampered for the next half day.
Monday (19).JPG
Don and Darlene were in The Sheldon Room.
Monday (20).JPG
Cerwin and I had The Cotswold Room
Monday (21).JPG
Luxurious is what came to mind when we saw our room.
Monday (22).JPG
Our pretty bathroom.
Monday (23).JPG
Paulanne recommended this restaurant – a few blocks from Ashcroft House.
 Oh, what fun.  There was live jazz – which I really enjoy.
Monday (24).JPG
Don’t we look a bit weather-beaten?
I guess we had reason to look like we had been traveling – after thirteen hours of travel by road and ferry.
 Monday (25).JPG
My quiche and salad.
If I remember correctly, Darlene chose the same meal.  The men chose steak.  Cerwin was brave enough to try the steak and calamari (fried squid).  He liked it, especially with the dip that was included.  He does not usually choose seafood.
~~~

After dinner we took a short, driving tour of Victoria.

~~~
 Monday (26).JPG
The Empress Hotel – where I understand the queen stays when she is in town.
Monday (27).JPG
The Parliament buildings are beautiful at night.
~~~

Stay tuned for our fabulous breakfast at Ashcroft House.

We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.

2 Corinthians 4:7 (New Living Translation)

~~~
Lord, I am glad that You know me
for who I am.
You are not impressed by
my job title
my skin color
my gender
my appearance.
Thank you for the times you exalted me
when I didn’t deserve it
and the times you humbled me
when I did deserve it.
Thank You for being the same
always
that I can count on You to be reliable and trustworthy
that your promises and precepts are true.
Thank you that you don’t expect perfection
just obedience.
I’m glad you know my limitations
and remind me at times of my humanity and frailty.
Thank you for being my potter
the weaver of the threads of my life
my power
my joy
my delight.
Thank you for being my strength when I am weak
my wealth when I am poor
my joy when I am sad
my courage when I am afraid
my understanding when I am confused.
Monday
Taking the Ferries to Vancouver Island
We left Don and Darlene’s house in Abbotsford at 5:30 a.m. – to be in line to board the first ferry at Horseshoe Bay by 7:15.
Monday.jpg
Internet stats and photo of Queen of Coquitlam
Carries:  360 cars, 12 semis, 1,500 crew and passengers
Horsepower:  11,860  –  Max speed:  20.5 knots  –  Built:  1976
Monday (1).JPG
This was our route on Monday (green = travel by car, dotted blue = ferry):  Travel from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale by ferry.  Drive to Earls Cove.  Travel from Earls Cove to Saltery Bay by ferry.  Drive from Saltery Bay to Powell River.  Travel from Powell River to Comox by ferry.  Drive to Victoria.
Don scheduled this route for our scenic pleasure.
Monday (2).JPG
We have not traveled by ferry for many years, and discovered that ferries have been greatly updated.
Monday (3).JPG
A store on the second deck.
Monday (4).JPG
By this time we were ready for our first cup of coffee.  Darlene and I made great traveling partners, as we prefer eating light.  When we couldn’t decide if we wanted more than coffee or tea, I asked if she would like to share a banana and a yogurt.  She liked that idea.  I’m not sure what the men had.  It looks like Cerwin had a muffin.
 Then we were back in our cars.  We off-boarded at 8:00.
 A “drive-by shooting” of a row of seagulls.
Monday (14).JPG
 This time I asked Cerwin to stop the car.
Monday (15).JPG
 Our next stop was Earls Cove – to wait for the ferry.  (Earl Sauder, I took this picture for you!)
Monday (16).JPG
 There was one truck and two cars ahead of us, so we knew we would make this ferry.
Monday (17).JPG
 I had plenty of time to walk around and look for photo opportunities.
Monday (18).JPG
 This area is like a rain forest – with moss growing on everything.
 Here she comes – Island Sky.
 IMG_2427.JPG
Don took this picture of me standing on a picnic table – to get the next photo.
Monday (30).JPG
 Internet stats of Island Sky
Carries:  125 cars and 450 crew and passengers
Horsepower:  4,416  –  Max speed:  15.5 knots  –  Built:  2009
(Several regular travelers said this was their first ride on Island Sky.)
Monday (31).JPG
 A few pictures from the upper (outside) deck.
Monday (32).JPG
The stats on this one didn’t mention how many semis fit, but there were some on board.
Monday (33).JPG
 This pretty view got my attention and called for a closeup shot.
Monday (34).JPG
Monday (35).JPG
We were a bit concerned that we would miss the Powell River ferry, and have to wait two hours for the next one – which meant it would be dark for much of our drive from Comox to Victoria.  This woman lived at Powell River, and gave the men some ideas of things to see if we had to spend two hours there.
Monday (36).JPG
We got to Powell River as they were beginning to load Queen of Burnaby.
Monday (37).jpg
 Internet stats and photo of Queen of Burnaby
Carries:  192 cars and 659 crew and passengers
Horsepower:  6,000  –  Max speed:  16.5 knots  –  Built:  1965
Monday (38).JPG
We had lunch on this trip which began at noon and ended at Comax at 1:15 p.m.  I had a cup of delicious beef-barley soup.
~~~

Because we live in a landlocked area, I never realized how much island people depend on ferries – or how time-comsuming they are.  You want to arrive an hour ahead of time (even on the off-season) to be guaranteed a spot on the ferry.

There are restaurants and waiting areas at most loading docks, so you can get out of your car and go inside until it is time to board.

It appeared that frequent travelers have leaned to use their time wisely by working at workstations, reading, studying, taking their children to the play areas, or eating.

My help and glory are in God—granite-strength and safe-harbor-God—So trust him absolutely, people; lay your lives on the line for him.

Thank You, Lord, that my failures and mistakes are part of the “all things”

Your love

forgiveness

power

sufficiency

ability to overrule

transforming presence within me.

I am grateful for your constant cleansing

as I confess each sin

I praise You that I am free of condemnation

because Jesus died on the cross for me.

Thank You that Your amazing grace

enables me to hold my head up high again

as I trust You for wisdom and strength.

We know that God is always at work for the good of everyone who loves him.

Romans 8:28 (Contemporary English Version)

Thank You for the struggles Cerwin and I, our family, and TFC face at times.

times when bad things just happen

times when I feel that wrong or unwise decisions have been made

─as I see it

but, I could be wrong.

Thank You for working in our lives

and theirs

even when bad choices have been made.

I am thankful that the battle is not mine

but Yours

that the final chapter has not yet been written.

Thank You for victories

and defeats.

My goal today is to set

fix

my eyes on You

on Your will for my life

and to keep learning

about the personality and person of God.

Catching Up On Our Trip

This is Tuesday morning, shortly after 6:00 a.m. on Vancouver Island, and I am finally on my own computer with time to catch up on our trip.  (I borrowed Don’s when we were there, because we could not get my wireless to work at their house.)  We are staying at a fabulous bed and breakfast in Victoria, BC.  Breakfast is not served until nine, and Cerwin is still sleeping.

~~~
Saturday
Saturday.JPG
Our neat little bedroom in Don and Darlene’s apartment complex.
Saturday (1).JPG
Our first stop was an 8:00 breakfast at Hank and Joanne Giesbrecht’s house.
Saturday (2).JPG
A few of their pretty plants and flowers.
Saturday (3).JPG
Saturday (5).JPG
Our breakfast consisted of this fresh fruit dish…
Saturday (6).JPG
and her homemade nut and fruit bread.
Saturday (7).JPG
Delicious!
Saturday (4).JPG
Most of us topped our bread with some of her homemade raspberry jam.  (Raspberries abound in this area.)
Saturday (9).JPG
Left to right:  Darlene, Don, Hank, Cerwin, and Joanne.
It was so much fun to visit with Hank and Joanne and hear “Their Story.”  They met in a logging camp where he worked in logging, and she was the school teacher for the children of the logging families.
Saturday (10).JPG
Hank and Joanne have been involved with TFC for many years, so the men had lots to talk about.
Saturday (11).JPG
Shortly after leaving their place near Abbotsford, we pulled into a small farm where Don and Darlene introduced us to their horse friend Jade.
Saturday (12).JPG
Jade was curious about me and quite friendly.
Saturday (13).JPG
Saturday (14).JPG
Saturday (15).JPG
Little Joe was farther away in the pasture, and totally ignored us – despite Don and Darlene’s urgings to come closer.
Saturday (16).JPG
After a short stop at Don and Darlene’s place, Cerwin and I entered Mike and Florence Foisy’s address into our trusty GPS unit and drove right up to their new house in Chilliwack.
Mike is the lead chaplain at the chapel in Chilliwack, and I needed about an hour to proof an article I am doing on them for the May issue of the Highway News and Good News.
Saturday (17).JPG
After updating the article, we met Dave and Annie Giesbrecht at The Mandarin for a Chinese lunch.
When we delivered the chapel to Chilliwack in 2008, we stayed at Dave and Annie’s house for six days.  Dave is a volunteer chaplain.  These two couples have been part of TFC in this area for many years.
Saturday (20).JPG
My lunch.
Saturday (21).JPG
On our way back to Abbotsford, we stopped to see the chapel we had delivered ten months ago.
Saturday (22).JPG
The chaplain on duty was not there, so we just checked it out and took a few pictures.
Saturday (23).JPG
The weather is warmer here than at our home in Pennsylvania, which means new growth is starting on the blueberries.
Concerning the weather, I noticed on my computer that it is currently 21 degrees at home this morning (Tuesday).  It is forty-three here on the island.
Saturday (24).JPG
Dinner with Wayne and Amy Dueckman
After getting back to Abbotsford, we spent the rest of the afternoon with Don and Darlene, then met Wayne and Amy for dinner at a local restaurant.
They live about a mile from Don and Darlene, and this restaurant is about halfway between their houses.  It was wonderful to catch up on their lives.  Wayne is a trucker, and Amy works for MCC (Mennonite Central Committee).  We met them – and they met each other – when both came to Pennsylvania (about twenty years ago) to serve with MCC.  Amy was from Kansas, and Wayne from here in BC.
Saturday (25).JPG
My salad
Saturday (27).JPG
The men got hamburgers and fries.
What a wonderful day of fellowship!
Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (The Message)
~~~

Thank You for each quality in Cerwin

that I find frustrating.

Thank You for the patience and strength I derive

when I come to You concerning these things.

Thank you for the completed person you are making in me

as I wait on You.

Thank You for his patience

in each quality of me he finds frustrating.

Thank you for blessing us

even when we don’t deserve it.

You have enlarged my spiritual dwelling place

stretched my tent curtains wide

lengthened my cords

strengthened my stakes (Isaiah 54:2).

Lord, I thank you for wisdom, patience and strength.

You exceed anyone or anything in my life.
