New Windows

An Extreme Makeover For Our House

Windows.JPG

Daryl Bollinger’s three sons arrived about 10:00 yesterday morning, and by 4:00 p.m. all but the window at our kitchen sink was installed.

Windows (2).JPG

It was time to remove our forty-two-year-old windows.

The two large windows in front of the house have been “foggy” between the panes for many years, which means I kept them covered with mini-blinds.

Windows (3).JPG

The guys started by distributing windows to the correct room, then removing old ones and installing new ones.

Daryl (the dad, standing next to Cerwin) stopped in to check on the job just in time for coffee yesterday.  I enjoyed watching and hearing these brothers working together.

I love standing here and looking out the window.  I think I don’t want to put the mini-blinds up again.

The bow window in the kitchen was next.

This was the end of their day on Wednesday.

They were back again this morning at 7:30 to install the window at our kitchen sink.

They spent the rest of the day putting the finishing touches to the exterior of each window.  I’m sure there is a correct term for “wrapping them with aluminum.”

Thanks to pianowithjen for giving me the right word.  It’s called “capping.”

If you ever need new windows, I highly recommend the Bollingers.

It feels like our house had an “extreme makeover.”

We are leaving for Pembroke, New York, for a ministry-related trip on Friday morning, but I just want to stand here and look at (and out of) our windows.

The Old Gang

Old Gang.JPG

Last night we had supper at a local restaurant with friends from our teenage days – we call ourselves “The Old Gang”.

When our children were young we had a picnic once a year, then after they were grown, we began going on day trips – one of our guys drives motorcoach.  Now that most of us are retired (or partially so) we began getting together for breakfast or supper in between the yearly day-trip.

Old Gang (1).JPG

Last night the couples in charge of this get-together decided that it would be fun to have the guys at one table and the ladies at the other.

Old Gang (2).JPG

It was fun to visit with the ladies.

Old Gang (3).JPG

We had a delicious meal…

Old Gang (4).JPG

…served by Wendy, a great waitress.

Old Gang (5).JPG

Bob had us laughing as he imagined what each of us might be doing about twenty years from now – some with a touch of dementia.

I was walking the hallway of a nursing home with Cerwin, who was in a wheel chair thinking he was pulling a load of propane.

Old Gang (6).JPG

These three were sitting somewhere in a nursing home talking about the good old days.  Abe (right) was looking for his blue Pontiac, Larry told him to keep quiet, and Homer (left) interrupted Larry by acting like he was driving truck and blowing his air horn.  (Cerwin was the sound of the air horn.)

~~~
What a fun evening.
Memorial Day Painting & Cleanup At Our House
There are not enough words of thanks that we can say to our Pennsylvania children and grandchildren for their help at the house yesterday.
Jana and Jenna removed the remains of a few more spring flowers.
I put Nate to work doing some weedeating in the “jungle” area of our woodlot.
Cerwin and I are both pleased that every part of the house’s exterior that needed paint was painted.
The girls finished the shed door.
Diana painted a post and some braces at the shed.
Nate and Josh set the table for lunch.
Monday (9).JPG
Lunch was make-your-own-sub.
Monday (10).JPG
Chris brought rhubarb pie…
Rhubarb Cream Delight Dessert
(Page 287 of the newest White Oak Church of the Brethren cookbook)
CRUST: 1 cup flour, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup butter or margarine
RHUBARB LAYER:  3 cups fresh rhubarb – cut in 1/2″ pieces, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon flour
CREAM LAYER:  12 ounces cream cheese – softened, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 eggs
TOPPING: 8 ounces diary sour cream, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla
CRUST:  Mix flour, sugar, and butter; pat into 10″ pie plate.
RUHBARB LAYER:  Combine rhubarb, sugar, and flour; toss lightly and pour into crust.  Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes.
CREAM LAYER:  Meanwhile, prepare cream layer by beating together cream cheese and sugar until fluffy.  Beat in eggs, one at a time; then pour over hot rhubarb layer.  Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until almost set.
TOPPING:  Combine ingredients; spread over hot layers.  Chill
ENJOY
Jere
Doors were finished after lunch.
Jere’s wife, Kristen, was here some of the time, but was not able to help very much due to hip pain.  She is going through a variety of tests to determine the source of the problem.  Ask the Lord to give the doctors and Kristen insight and wisdom.  I missed getting a photo of her.
Monday (6).JPG
Jared got a painting lesson from Diana and Deb.
Monday (13).JPG
Diana, Jenna, and Jana took advantage of the hot afternoon to wash our CRV.
Monday (14).JPG
I think Chris was glad there were enough painters.  She loves gardening, and spent most of the day in our flower beds.
Monday (15).JPG
Another afternoon project was removing and washing mini-blinds.  The garage ones needed some extra scrubbing.
Monday (16).JPG
Jana and Jenna
I usually clean these in the bathtub – one room at a time but this time they must all come down because new windows are being installed later this week.  We used the leaf blower to clean the driveway, which gave us a large drying area.
Monday (17).JPG
It looks like Jesse is going to need a bath as well.
Monday (18).JPG
Mother said this was her first ride in a “hot rod.”
We weren’t sure if Cerwin’s mother would be coming for supper, because she had a head cold on Sunday, but late in the afternoon, she called to say that she was feeling fine.  Since Roy was already on the road (he took Diana and Jana to Rita’s) we asked if he could pick her up.
Monday (20).JPG
Cerwin took orders:  hamburger, hot dog, fresh sausage, or bratwurst.
Monday (21).JPG
A game of some sort happened after supper.
Diana tries to keep her dad from claiming the ball she caught.  I think she was successful in keeping it.
Monday (23).JPG
You win some – you lose some.
Monday (26).JPG
It was a glorious day – workwise and weatherwise.
A Fabulous Memorial Day
It was an incredibly busy day.  Our Pennsylvania children and grandchildren came back to finish the painting project – and a few other things that needed attention.
I sat down about half an hour ago – after cleaning up the kitchen and garage, and am happily weary.
I looked through the pictures and decided to post only one tonight.  I need more time to sort through them and choose the best.
DSC_0078.JPG
After all the work was finished.
I was getting supper together when I looked out the kitchen window and saw our children “hanging out” together.   I loved it!
Roy, Jeff, Chris, Kristen (Jenna and Jesse are behind Chris), Jere, and Deb.
More about the day tomorrow night.
Join Me On Our Patio
My Patio.JPG
I have a good stand of mint tea, and thought if I brewed several gallon I could convince many of you to come and sit a spell.
(This invitation is especially for my brother in Italy.)
My Patio (1).JPG
 The tea has been washed.
My Patio (2).JPG
The water is hot.
My Patio (3).JPG
 I’ll let it brew for about ten minutes.
My Patio (4).JPG
Okay, I’m ready for you.
 This is the first cup of six gallon that is cooling in our refrigerator – waiting for you to join me to experience some of the things I’ve seen in the past few days.
My Patio (5).JPG
 Our son Jere is spraying our yard for weeds.  Maybe we should stay inside until he is finished.
My Patio (6).JPG
 Oh, no.  I didn’t expect this today.  I think we should stay inside a bit longer – until Eli is finished hauling manure.
My Patio (7).JPG
 Okay, now we can relax on the patio.
My Patio (8).JPG
 Cutting alfalfa puts a beautiful aroma in the air.
