My First Mud Sale
Part 1of 3
Most mud sales in our area are held to benefit volunteer fire companies. This one also benefits a local Amish school.
Four nearby churches provided parking space (this one is our church), and local school and senior citizen busses took care of the shuttle service. The sale was being held just beyond the end of the road on the left side of this photo.
I went to the sale with my sister (who parked at her daughter’s house) and walked across a field. This was my first view of items for sale.
It was a perfect day for a sale – cold and sunny, with little mud. These are called mud sales because they are held in springtime when mud often prevails.
The next few pictures are of horse-drawn implements for sale

Many items are sold on consignment.
There were five or six auctions going on at the same time, with a record number at bidders – more than 1,300.

Several ponies were auctioned at 2:00 p.m.
Farmers brought hay, straw, and corn fodder on pickup trucks…
…and wagons.
