Sand and Sea

Going to the Maine coast with Michelle was a treat for this girl from Pennsylvania farm country who rarely sees an ocean.

We sat in the sand…

…and allowed waves to swirl around our legs.

Her eyes and ears are trained on “things of the sea” – sights and sounds that I may have missed – like this distant lighthouse…

…or this one.

Michelle heard the lobster boat long before we could see it.

She pointed out the sailboat when it was still small on the horizon.

We could have stayed here a long time, listening to the sound of crashing waves and watching the incoming tide.

We searched and searched for just one sand dollar, but that was not to be on this beautiful, sunny morning.

However we discovered a lot of other interesting things!

We both had things to do and places to be, and knew that after one hour it was time to say goodbye to this beach that continues to be sculpted by the incoming tide.

After leaving on the same path by which we entered…

…Michelle took the “scenic” way to our daughter’s house.

One of the most interesting sights was this seagull and double-crested cormorant.

We were interested in why the cormorant was flapping its wings – and continued to do this for the entire five minutes or so that we watched it.

Thanks, Michelle, it was a fabulous morning.
