We learned some interesting facts about the many bridges that span the Susquehanna at Harrisburg.

John Harris built the first bridge – the second one was built because some people thought he was charging too much toll.

The John Harris – Simeon Cameron Mansion

It was so interesting to travel into an era before and during the time of Abraham Lincoln.  John Harris was the original owner, then following a few other owners, it was owned by Simeon Cameron, who served on Abraham Lincoln’s cabinet.

Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad

Recaping our “River & Rails” Bus Trip Yesterday

DSC_0167.JPG

Our day started at 8:30 AM when we met our traveling companions at Elite Coach, Ephrata, PA.

Traveling in an Elite Coach is very comfortable and luxurious.

The day was organized by Charlene Fahnestock of Red Rose Tours.  She is a friend, and second cousin, from church.  In this photo we are ready to leave our second pickup location – A. C. Moore, Lancaster, PA – before heading to Middletown.

A Few Highlights from the Train Trip

We boarded the train at the 1891 Freight Station in Middletown, PA.

The conductor on the right was our narrator for the trip.

This house was built in the early 1700’s and is still occupied – however – not by the original owners!

During the first half of the 75-minute trip, we enjoyed listening to the history of the train and area.

On the return trip, we had a lively sing-a-long – mostly train songs.

Rivers and Rails

 DSC_0044

Cerwin and I enjoyed a one day bus trip called “Rivers and Rails”.

We rode Hummelstown Railroad; enjoyed lunch on Pride of the Susquehanna (riverboat); toured Harris-Cameron Mansion and the Capitol Building; then had a delicious supper at an Amish farm.

I am too tired to search through all the photos and post details about the day, as we stayed up until midnight last night – to get a mailing ready for the post office this morning, before meeting the bus at 8:30.

It was a great day.  I will post more tomorrow.

Right now I need to got to bed before I fall asleep at my computer!

My Clue That

Hunting Season Is Approaching!

Cerwin is spending more time at target practice with his Martin Prowler.

Hunting (gun or bow) is one of his favorite things to do with vacation days.

Even Before You Awoke This Morning

God’s Thoughts Were On You.

.

God, your thoughts are precious to me.

They are so many!

 If I could count them,

they would be more than all the grains of sand.

When I wake up, I am still with you.

Delicious Mint Tea

DSC_0005

After spending last evening and this morning weeding the flower and tea beds in our yard, I decided that my reward would be a glass of freshly brewed garden tea.

As I was enjoying its delicious, minty taste, I was reminded that as refresing as it is, nothing compares to the living water Jesus has given me.

If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.

If a person believes in me, rivers of living water will flow out from his heart.

A Great Day

I am finally getting caught up in the office and house after a month of disruptions due to the storm that caused the tree to fall on our house – making two holes in the roof and tearing down the electric wire that sent a 220 volt surge through our house and office – “frying” more than twenty-five items.

The nice thing is that I got a lot of new things – now I have to figure out how all this equipment works!

I babysat four grandchildren part of the day, and Jana helped by sorting some cards and envelopes from a banquet a few months ago.

I finished one mailing, typed up minutes and sent them to my proof reader, edited a six page newsletter I wrote the other day – which had been proofed.  It is now being printed, hopefully to get in Monday’s mail.

I talked to a friend who called about ministry business, but we ended up talking about lots of things.  That was fun, and by the way, friend, the next two pictures are for you!

This is what our son’s chicks looked like on July 4.

DSC_0036.JPG

This is what they looked this week.  They’re teenagers already.

After closing the office at 5 PM and a quick supper, I spent the evening weeding flower beds.  It felt good to get that job done.

It was a beautiful evening.
