Intrepid & Enterprise

World War II Battle Ship & Space Shuttle

1 (1)

As we approached the Intrepid, I noticed a cruise ship in the background and remembered seeing the airplanes on the flight deck of this vessel when we left on our cruise in January. Back then I didn’t realize it was the Intrepid.

I suppose there are much larger ships, but it looked huge to me.

The flight deck of the ship holds many airplanes and the space shuttle.

These performed sensitive intelligence gathering missions beginning in 1962 with a maximum speed of 2,210 mph at 75,000 ft. (that’s three times the speed of sound).

If was fun seeing one of these up close.

Intrepid Museum is proud to be one of the few places in the world to provide the opportunity for visitors to get an up close view of a space shuttle – inside the balloon-shaped pavilion.

My first words were, “Oh, wow!” as I saw how huge it was.

This is one of the pictures I saw on TV that day, causing me to want to see it up close.

I was not disappointed.

Our Trip By Rail

DSC_0003

We were at the train station early, so I walked outside to take a few photos.

Before long it was time for our traveling companions, our daughter Deb and son-in-law Roy,and us to prepare for departure.

Before long we were traveling through beautiful Lancaster County farmland.

We were in the Quiet Car, so did our best to keep our conversation low and do a lot of reading.

DSC_0024

Philadelphia was one of our stops before heading to the Big Apple.

DSC_0030

After arriving at Penn Station we walked to our hotel near Times Square.

By the time we had checked into our hotel we were ready for lunch. Roy and Deb took us to a Brooklyn Diner. (If I remember correctly, there are three in NYC.)

This photo included me (it wasn’t very good), but I thought it was a great picture of Deb.

Cerwin and I shared a delicious chicken sandwich.

Roy and Deb introduced us to noodle kugel

Kugels are Ashkenazi (European) Jewish dishes, traditionally served on the Sabbath and holidays. This sweet noodle kugel included raisins. Yes, noodles are the main ingredient and it was yummy.

~~~
Following the meal it was time to walk off some of those calories – and we did that when we walked to another part of the city to see the aircraft carrier Intrepid (a museum) and the space shuttle Enterprise (which is stored on Intrepid’s flight deck).
This trip happened, because I was talking to Deb on the phone the day the Enterprise was being transported to New York City by air and mentioned that I would like to see it, she said, “Let’s do it.”
High Siblings ~ Random
Guess Where We Are Going
1 (1)
Left: Elvin, Pat, Mother, Doris, Bob. Right: Cerwin, Velda, and Mel
On Monday evening, October 3, Cerwin, his siblings, their mother, and spouses had supper at Lititz Family Cupboard.
1 (2)
We enjoy being together when Bob and Doris visit from Minnesota.
(To the sisters from Georgia who met us here and recognized me because of my blog: Your kind words were a great encouragement!)
2 (2)
I couldn’t resist taking this picture the other day when we (Bunny & Peg O’Hare and I) were entering Amish country – on the way home from a funeral in the Philadelphia area.
2 (3)
I enjoy watching horses.
3 (1)
When coming through Manheim (on the way home from Bunny & Peg’s house) it was obvious that it was the evening of the Farm Show Parade as the sidewalks were lined with chairs and blankets.
~~~

We went on a really fun trip during the weekend of October 6 & 7.

4 (1)

Guess where we went.

4 (3)

I’ll tell you tomorrow night.

Sauder Reunion

Our Last Reunion for Summer/Fall of 2012

Saturday Evening, September 29

1

Those who keep records think this is the 50th Sauder Reunion. Some of the older ones thought it may even be more.

2 (1)

Cerwin’s youngest sister, Doris, and her husband, Bob, (from Minnesota) could not be here for Mother’s 95th Birthday Party a few weeks ago. Since I took pictures of Mother with each of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who attended the party, I wanted a photo of Bob and Doris with her.

2 (2)

2 (3)

There was lots of visiting with cousins, aunts, uncles, and other relatives before supper.

3 (2)

3 (3)

Cerwin’s cousin Larry Newswanger led us in a song before prayer. He is surrounded by cousins John Martin and Ray Sauder who keep this reunion going.

4 (1)

The food table looked inviting.

Cerwin’s mother (right) and her three surviving brothers. Her only surviving sister, Naomi, was not well enough to attend. Back: Uncle Luke and his wife Willamae. Front: Aunt Bertha and Uncle John, Uncle Amos, and Mother

4 (7)

I like this picture of Cerwin and Uncle Amos. Amos was his hunting partner on Cerwin’s first deer hunt. Cerwin was fifteen and shot an eleven-point buck – the largest in his hunting career, so far.

4 (8)

I think this is a good picture of Uncle John and Aunt Bertha. John is ninety-six and Bertha ninety-five.

Sunrise to Sunset On a Nice Fall Day

Sunrise on a dewy morning

A northern mocking bird came to enjoy the morning with me.

1 (9)

As did a chickadee and a house finch.

1 (10)

I have been seeing a hairy woodpecker recently, which is rare at our feeders. They look exactly like a downy woodpecker, but are different in size.  A hairy woodpecker is about 9 inches long while the downy is only about 6 inches long.

1 (11)

The leaves in our woods are beginning to change colors.

And many are browning on the ground.

God created a beautiful day.
