In the afternoon Mother High, Doris, Aimee, and Judi went to a bridal shower while Mother Hershey and I took care of the children, finished their school projects, and prepared the house for their family night.  Japheth Jr. and Jeremiah took turns washing the floor and playing a computer game (fifteen-minute segments).

Day Five in Minnesota

Friday

This was my day of total relaxation and vacation.  Bob and Cerwin asked if I wanted to go along on their fishing trip.  They didn’t have to ask me twice!

5-16-08.JPG

 My first photo opportunity happened when we came upon this porcupine.  I had never seen one up a tree.

5-16-08 (1).JPG

Shortly after that two deer crossed the road in front of us.  If we had not seen them, we certainly would not have seen them in their natural camouflage.

5-16-08 (2).JPG

 Our first fishing stop was at Gilstad.  They did not catch any fish, but I enjoyed the wildlife.

 Forster’s Tern

5-16-08 (6).JPG

 From there we delivered a mirror frame (with mirror included) that Bob designed for this home.  Bob is a skilled cabinet maker, as well as pastor of Kitchi Pines Mennonite Church.

5-16-08 (7).JPG

 These are cabinets he built.

 The owner built this wood duck house to match his house.

5-16-08 (11).JPG

 After lunch we went to the dock at Bemidji.

5-16-08 (12).JPG

 I enjoyed watching the lesser terns catch fish

This female common merganser tried to join another merganser couple.

5-16-08 (15).JPG

The male merganser did not consider having an affair with this lady and immediately chased her away.

5-16-08 (16).JPG

  5-16-08 (17).JPG

Our men did not catch any fish, but another fisherman on the dock hooked this nice bass.

5-16-08 (18).JPG

He graciously held it for me before throwing it back in the lake.  Bass is not yet in season.

5-16-08 (19).JPG

Sunset outside Bob and Doris’ window.

Toward evening the men went to the hospital to visit a church member, then back to the Bemidji dock.  Fishing is supposed to be better at night.

5-16-08 (20).JPG

 Doris and the mothers played a game.

5-16-08 (21).JPG

 The men were pleased with their catch tonight – seven nice-sized walleye.  The largest was twenty inches.  This photo was taken by Bob after midnight.

Day Four in Minnesota

Thursday

2.JPG

First thing this morning we went to Jon and Jen’s house because Judi had forgotten to take something along to work at the sewing machine shop.  Jon is Bob and Doris’ youngest son.

Jon was going to Bemidji and was able to save Bob or Doris from making the forty-minute trip.

We had northern pike for supper.

2 (14).JPG

Aimee invited me to go along to a homeschooling tea at Hope Byler’s – next door.

I enjoyed learning to know these ladies better and listening to their ideas.

Minnesota – Day Three

2.JPG

 Looking toward Bob and Doris’ house from “my current office” – the children’s school room.  Notice frost on the garden, the sun rising in the east, and smoke coming from the shed which houses the huge wood furnace that heats Japheth and Aimee’s house.

2 (1).JPG

Mother High holding her youngest great grandchild – Lynne.

2 (2).JPG

The hummingbirds were pleased when Doris put the feeder out the day after we arrived.  We saw this one within a few hours.

2 (3).JPG

Bob and Doris decided to discontinue raising chickens, so were pleased when a friend was interested in buying their chicken wire.

2 (4).JPG

 Japheth and Aimee are going to visit her parents in Virginia in a few weeks and purchased this trailer frame – to which he and Bob will build framework for storing suitcases for the eight people in their family.  Japheth put the frame together last night.

2 (6).JPG

 My stepmother, Velma, hanging wash for Aimee.

2 (7).JPG

 Aimee hanging laundry.

2 (8).JPG

Aimee designs beautiful cards and sells them in several stores.  Since Japheth is off today, and Judi is tending the sewing machine shop, Japheth and Aimee are going to resupply a store where they sell the most.  Wayne is “helping.”

 The children watch as Bob, Japheth, and Cerwin cut wood for the wood furnace.

Some of you thought these were our grandchildren.  They are Cerwin’s sister’s grandchildren.

The late spring is making life difficult for the bees.  Bob keeps hoping the dandelions will soon bloom.  I never realized the importance of dandelions in supplying food for the bees.

2 (22).JPG

 Japheth giving sugar water to his bees.

2 (23).JPG

We had school in the afternoon when Japheth and Aimee delivered her cards and did a few other errands.  We worked with stickers while the two little boys slept.  Japheth and Aimee took Lynne with them.

2 (26).JPG

 The boys can hardly wait until it is time for them to play a game on my laptop.  This one involves matching blocks.  When four of the same color are put in a square, they explode.  Each time they make a move, more blocks are added, so the idea of the game is to keep the board from filling up.

2 (27).JPG

The little ones wanted to build a “house” with chairs and blankets.

2 (28).JPG

Cerwin and Bob went fishing for a few hours this afternoon.  Cerwin caught a small, ten-inch Walleye.

Since it was a beautiful evening I walked to small group prayer service at Hope’s mother’s house.  These are Dawson and Hope’s cattle.

 So ended another day in the northwoods.

Day Two in Minnesota

 One of my favorite things to do when visiting the Stauffer’s is having “school” with Japheth and Aimee’s children – and it seems they enjoy it too.

Knowing I would be here to take care of the five oldest children, Aimee scheduled several appointments on Tuesday – taking baby Lynne with her.

5-13-08.JPG

While waiting for breakfast, the three oldest – Loraine, Jeremiah, and Japheth watched my Monarch butterfly slide presentation from last summer.

Morning devotions – Bob and Cerwin

5-13-08 (3).JPG

A delicious breakfast of baked oatmeal.

5-13-08 (4).JPG

Cerwin and Bob were off to install cabinets – while I walked back to Japheth and Aimee’s to be with the children.

5-13-08 (5).JPG

The lilac’s are ready to open when warm weather appears.

5-13-08 (6).JPG

When I arrived, Jeremiah was reading to Jaden and Loraine.

5-13-08 (7).JPG

After Aimee left, our first school project was to make books.  Notice the blank note books.

5-13-08 (8).JPG

The covers and a few inside pictures are finished.

5-13-08 (9).JPG

Jaden chose one of my bird pictures for his cover.

5-13-08 (10).JPG

 Wayne chose a picture of cows.

5-13-08 (11).JPG

Playing memory.  Left to right:  Jeremiah (5), Japheth (6), Loraine (4), Wayne (3), and Jaden (2).  Loraine won!

Yogurt popsicles for snacktime.

5-13-08 (13).JPG

I love this picture of Jaden, as it captured his personality.

5-13-08 (14).JPG

5-13-08 (15).JPG

Wayne and Jaden’s favorite school project was cutting paper and putting it into bowls.

5-13-08 (16).JPG

If cutting didn’t work for Wayne he kept trying until he figured out how to cut.  If Jaden couldn’t cut it, he tore it!

5-13-08 (17).JPG

5-13-08 (18).JPG

At “Grandpa Stauffer’s” Doris is reading a book to everyone – especially her mother – because it is a true story written about the area where Mother High grew up.

5-13-08 (19).JPG

Loraine and Aunt Judi listening.

5-13-08 (20).JPG

We had Walleye for supper.  Yum!

5-13-08 (21).JPG

We were invited to Japheth and Aimee’s for dessert.  Finally the sun is beginning to come out.

5-13-08 (22).JPG

5-13-08 (25).JPG

Let me introduce you to baby Lynne – age six months.

5-13-08 (23).JPG

5-13-08 (24).JPG

5-13-08 (26).JPG

5-13-08 (27).JPG

 So ended our second day in northern Minnesota.

Don’t you feel sorry for us having to endure this kind of vacation?

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

to

Bemidji, Minnesota

MN.JPG

We had been looking forward to this trip with our mothers since our last trip to visit Cerwin’s youngest sister, Doris, and her family, two years ago, so it was good to see the lakes and trees of north central Minnesota as we approached the Bemidji airport.

It was a great day with good flights and easy connections.

MN (1).JPG

Our first stop was Japheth’s Stitch in Time shop in Bemidji.  Japheth is Bob and Doris’ oldest son.  This is the area where he does repairs.

MN (12).JPG

It still feels like winter here, so I suggested that he may want to take down this sign!

MN (13).JPG

Cerwin and our brother-in-law Bob displaying their feeling about the sign.

MN (14).JPG

Japheth Jr. and Jeremiah were our welcoming committee when we pulled up to the house.  Bob and Doris and Japheth and Aimee’s houses are on the same acreage, overlooking a lake.

MN (15).JPG

We are sleeping in Japheth and Aimee’s guest room, so after unpacking our things, Loraine showed me her “treasure box.”

MN (16).JPG

Big brother, Japheth, came to the rescue when she couldn’t figure out how to open it.

I began entering this post last night, but didn’t finish because I needed to get to bed early – we were getting up at 3:30 this morning.

I did a bit more work on it at the Harrisburg Airport a few hours ago.

Now I hope to finish it, as we have a three-hour layover in Minneapolis before flying to Bemidji (north central Minnesota), where Cerwin, his mother, my stepmother, and I will spend a week with Cerwin’s sister, Doris.

~~~
If I don’t post for a week – I am okay – but without Internet access.
Sunday’s
Make-a-Wish Parade
The morning paper says there were 381 trucks in the parade.
 We arrived at 8:00 a.m. to get our spot and be set up for those who wished to attend a worship service.
 The girls enjoyed helping.
 We enjoyed telling visitors about the ministry and showing many of them what a chapel looks like inside.
Make-a-Wish (7).JPG
It was fun for me to meet a Xanga friend –  http://www.xanga.com/raycindy93 We don’t live very far apart, but had never met.
 I always enjoy seeing the stuffed animals in Jeff Brown’s cattle truck when he is in parade.
Make-a-Wish (9).JPG
 We had about an hour wait from the time the parade started, until it was our turn.  Jenna enjoyed blowing the air horn – in preparation for the parade.
Make-a-Wish (11).JPG
 I took this picture of Diana looking in my truck window, not realizing I was also getting the reflections.
