Carefully build yourselves up in this most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit, staying right at the center of God’s love, keeping your arms open and outstretched, ready for the mercy of our Master, Jesus Christ. This is the unending life, the real life!

Assembling School Kits

Friday, September 24 & Saturday, September 25

Brethren Disaster Relief Auction

10-16-10 (1)

Church World Service Kits are small packages of supplies assembled by volunteers and shipped to people in need around the world.

10-16-10 (2)

There were several people in East Hall on Friday evening preparing the supplies for assembling the “Gifts of the Heart” School Kits on Saturday

Church World Service provides School Kits, Hygiene Kits, Baby Care Kits, and Emergency Clean-up Buckets. The contents of each Kit have been selected with care based on years of experience to make them as useful as possible, wherever and whenever they are sent.

To assemble a School Kit you will need:

  • One pair of blunt metal scissors (rounded tip)
  • Three 70-count spiral notebooks or notebooks totaling 200-210 pages (no loose-leaf or filler paper)
  • One 30-centimeter ruler (12″)
  • One hand-held pencil sharpener
  • One large eraser
  • Six new pencils with erasers
  • One box of 24 crayons (only 24)
  • One 12″ x 14″ to 14″ x 17″ finished size cotton or lightweight canvas bag with cloth handles.

10-16-10 (4)

10-16-10 (5)

By the time I got to East Hall on Saturday morning the room was abuzz with activity. Those in the foreground are flattening shipping boxes that held the supplies.

10-16-10 (6)

10-16-10 (7)

10-16-10 (8)

Behind them were twelve tables of workers, with the crew at each table assembling 1,000 School Kits.

That means they assembled 12,000 kits on this day!

At the end of the line, canvas bags filled with school supplies were folded and placed neatly in a box.

The box is then taped shut

…and moved to a Brethren Service Truck. I understand from Carol Fretz that her husband Joe drove the truck to New Windsor, Maryland, on Monday morning.

Can you guess what he is stirring?

He took the next shift, and is stirring the same thing. Look around and see if you can find any clues.

If you guessed caramel popcorn, you were correct.

Share-A-Meal is where you pay for a future meal (or meals) at someone’s home. The host/hostess signs up for this prior to the auction. They tell the coordinator how many people they can accommodate, the main meal entree, the date, their town and state, and the congregation or church (I noticed that some were Amish) they represent.

1a (19)

The cost is $20.00 per person per meal.

1a (20)

I took this photo shortly after noon on Friday, and you can see that many dates are already sold out.

1a (21)

A fun thing about this is you do not know who the other guests will be. For instance if the host has invited ten guests and you only need two, there will be eight other people attending the meal.

1a (22)

Another interesting twist is that the host does not know who is coming.

This enticing table was at the entrance of West Hall if you were coming from Center Hall.

Some of you have been commenting on the large variety of items and activities, so I thought it was time to enter some information from Brethren Disaster Relief Auction literature.

The Brethren Disaster Relief Auction began in 1977, and since then twelve million dollars has been raised to help victims of natural and manmade disasters. Every 4th weekend of September, members of the Church of the Brethren gather at the Lebanon Expo Center, Lebanon, Pennsylvania, in an effort to raise money for victims of natural and manmade disasters.

This event is sponsored by the Atlantic Northeast & Pennsylvania Southern Districts which represent more than 130 Church of the Brethren congregations. While most people gather in the main auditorium, vendors representing broad areas of interest set up their booths to display crafts, foods items, literature, and educational materials. Livestock and agricultural items are sold in outside sheds.

By faith in Christ you are in direct relationship with God. Your baptism in Christ was not just washing you up for a fresh start. It also involved dressing you in an adult faith wardrobe—Christ’s life, the fulfillment of God’s original promise.
