The Hershey Family Spring Dinner

Sunday, May 19

1 (1)

This used to be our Easter dinner. However, because our numbers have grown in the past few years, I wait until May (when it is hopefully warm) so we can open the garage door and utilize the outside for the serving table.

However, it was cool and drizzling, so we used every available space in the kitchen for serving the buffet lunch.

1 (2)

This family is my siblings and our children and grandchildren.

1 (5)

Everyone brings food that I “help” them choose, which gives us a great variety of dishes.

1 (6)

We were expecting sixty-three people, so carefully set up tables in the garage – finding room for exactly sixty-three.

1 (7)

Jana and Diana chose this table for two.

1a

We kept the driveway free of vehicles so the children could play Can Jam. The grass was too wet from the morning rain.

Roy and Deb’s newly rescued raccoons, Mercedes, Lincoln, and Bobbie Anne were also a hit with the children.

 Annie the prairie dog was also here – and a favorite of the little ones.

Deb still needs to feed these babies every few hours, so they cannot be left at home.

2

Deb had to come up with “Plan B” for the egg hunt because of the wet grass, so she and some of the older girls filled the baskets with eggs and placed them on the patio.

2a (1)

The children each chose a basket – beginning with the youngest. Deb does not always provide baskets, but this year when she was looking at some Easter items – on sale after Easter – a clerk noticed her interest and asked is she would take everything for a certain price! That worked out nice for our children.

I must tell you a cute story about Bella.

After the dinner Bella said to her mom, “I like Debbie. And I like her ‘house on the prairie dog.'”

Jana and Diana were glad there were extra baskets.

Eggs all have something inside – candy, gum, or a note that says you get a prize.

After the eggs are opened, they go back to Debbie and are put in this large plastic box.

When I took this picture of Heidi, I didn’t realize that I also got Laura’s baby belly.

Since she was already past her due date, and I am posting this a week after our dinner, I can show you who was waiting to be born.

3f

This is Elliot James – who was born on May 23.

The happy family – Dave, Laura, Elliot, Benny, and Caleb.

I “stole” the last two pictures from Andi’s Facebook.

Josh and Matt Repaired Our Patio Slate

Saturday, May 18

1 (1)

Because our grandson Josh (left) has been studying masonry this year in school, he noticed that the slate entrance next to our patio needed reset.

1 (2)

After we told him to go for it, he brought his masonry school friend Matt to help him with the project.

1 (3)

2

After several hours, they were satisfied with their job, and so were we. It looks like new again.

Thanks Josh and Matt.

3 (1)

I had planted geraniums and spread some fresh stones in the patio flower beds the day before.

3 (2)

Several weeks earlier I purchased a new bird bath because our old one was leaking.

4 (1)

Last week our son-in-law Roy gave me this new bird house. He knows I like outhouses so it is a perfect fit for our bird feeding area.

4 (3)

I filled my new hummingbird feeder (a Christmas gift from our granddaughter Elizabeth) last weekend as well.

~~~
It is satisfying to have the patio area ready for another summer.
Class 8 Parts
Fifteenth Anniversary
1 (1)
When we received the invitation to attend this celebration, we were glad that we had the evening of the 16th open.
1 (2)
Cerwin often stops in here for items he needs for new chapels.
1 (3)
On this night he ordered forty nut covers for the trailer wheels.
1 (4)
The free supper was a big attraction.
1 (5)
1 (6)
It was catered by Big John – who also does our Truck Rally chicken and pork barbecue.
1 (7)
As we were finishing our supper, we saw Jay Shaub getting his meal. Cerwin and Jay worked together many years ago.
1 (8)
I liked this “wheel” table.
Truckers seem to gather around trucks.
When the chapel at the Frystown, Pennsylvania, location was replaced, TFC decided to sell the old Marmon tractor that had been with it.
3 (2)
We were delighted that Chaplain Jake Wise wanted it.
3 (3)
3 (4)
He cleaned it up and takes it to local truck shows.
Update on the TFC Chapel Construction
for Calgary, Alberta
1 (1)
This is what the chapel looked like in early April when Cerwin took it to Amos and Mel Weaver for sandblasting and painting.
1 (2)
This is what it looked like when he brough it back to the TFC shop on May 17.
1 (3)
1 (4)
As soon as Weaver’s were finished, Cerwin took it to Eckert’s for lettering.
1 (5)
1 (6)
1 (7)
1 (8)
There aren’t enough words to express our appreciation for the amazing transformation the Weavers and Eckerts make to the TFC chapels.
1 (9)
On the way home from Eckert’s, Cerwin stopped at Stiegel Valley Flooring.
1 (10)
1 (11)
Jay and his guys do a great job of installing the carpet in the living quarters…
1 (12)
…and vinyl in the chapel area.
1 (13)
1 (14)
1 (15)
1 (16)
1 (17)
1 (18)
This week Cerwin, Glenn, and Clarence added more finishing touches: exterior crosses, lights, and reflective tape.
1 (19)
They also installed the air conditioners and cabinet doors.
1 (20)
It is looking good and will be ready to take to a few churches and truck shows in June – before we deliver it to Calgary in early July.
The administration had a great surprise for Mr. Metzer when they brought Mr. Eric Berlin to the stage.
Eric grew up in our little town of Penryn, and went to school with our children. He was one of Mr. Metzger’s early students and now has a long list of musical accomplishments (especially in trumpet), including Boston Philharmonic and University of Massachusetts Amherst.
If you are interested, you can read more about him at the following links.
I happened upon this photo opportunity following the concert.
Flowers from Roy
Photo of Jana taken by our daughter Deb. The flowers were from Roy. He was on a business trip to Michigan.
I missed getting a photo of Jana following the concert because she took her dad to meet Eric Berlin. Eric and Jere know each other from grade school.
