Ian, Jared, and Jesse

Thursday, November 10

1 (19)

The boys were here overnight because Jere and Kristen were leaving early to attend an Amish wedding in another county.

They were up early and wanted to play with the dominos.

1 (1)

Ian was into making fancy designs.

1 (2)

1 (3)

Then he liked to check if they would all fall down as dominos are supposed to do.

1 (4)

1 (5)

1 (6)

1 (7)

1 (8)

1 (9)

Jared was into building things, but not knocking them down.

1 (10)

1 (11)

The “building” on the right is a church.

1 (12)

1 (13)

This is a gate and pathway to the church.

1 (14)

After you go through the church there is another path and gate.

I love watching children being creative.

1 (15)

Jesse didn’t follow Ian or Jesse’s plan, but did a combination of both – sometimes making “buildings” sometimes making a train to knock down.

1 (16)

1 (17)

He was quite proud of this structure.

1 (18)

Then he enjoyed making it crash.

1 (20)

This was the first time he was successful in making a long train. (His little hands often knocked a domino over – destroying the train – long before he was ready.)

1 (21)

He loved watching them go down.

1 (22)

Then they wanted to play farm, so I surprised them with fields and roads after seeing this friends blog entry here. Although hers was much more elaborate than mine.

The beige masking tape didn’t show up as nicely as the blue. Sometime I will have to make a larger farm and road system in the carpeted area of the garage.

This was good enough for them, and they spent a lot of them here.

1 (23)

About mid afternoon Jesse wanted to make milk shakes – mostly because he likes to run the blender.

1 (24)

Just before supper Jesse fell asleep while watching his brothers play an Xbox game.

1 (25)

Ian loves to race cars.

1 (26)

Much of the western sky was orange tonight at sunset.

By bedtime our house was quiet again, as Jere and Kristen arrived here shortly after 8:00 p.m. It sounds like they had a great day with their friends.

First of all, I ask you to pray for everyone. Ask God to help and bless them all, and tell God how thankful you are for each of them.

The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know.

Is There a Benefit to Blessing Others?

I was listening to Focus on the Family on Tuesday morning while driving home from Curves. The speaker was talking about blessing and encouraging our family and friends. It grabbed my attention, as I am a great believer in the value and power of blessing and encouragement.

1a (1)

The speaker’s words were challenging me about the time I drove by our niece’s house and saw this sign. The quilts are for a quilt auction owned by my sister and her husband.

I immediately prayed, “Lord, bless them today.”

I hadn’t driven more than a few yards when I heard a quiet, inner voice say, “Stop and tell them what you did.” I argued with myself saying, “They will think I’m crazy.”

I argued with the inner voice for about a quarter of a mile before giving up, knowing that I would regret not going back. I turned around in a church parking lot and went back to Karen’s place where I knew Nancy and her three oldest daughters would be registering and measuring quilts.

1a (2)

They receive the quilts in a remodeled room on the second floor of their barn.

1a (21)

Of course they were a bit surprised to see me, and loved when I told them what I had just done.

1a (3)

Heidi (Amy’s daughter) and Karen receive quilt tops from a woman who drove in about the same time I arrived.

1a (4)

Karen is Marlin and Nancy’s oldest daughter. This barn is on the property that she and Larry own and live with their two children Travis and Ashlea.

1a (5)

This quilt top was on the table when I arrived.

1a (8)

A pretty quilt

More quilts

1a (11)

Many of the quilts are shipped ahead of time and must also be prepared for the auction.

Another quilt top

Amy holding her baby Lindsey (5 1/2 months old) as she helps her mom measure a quilt top. Amy is the third daughter of Marlin and Nancy.

1a (14)

Nancy, my only sister, is almost ten years younger than me. There are two brothers between us in age.

She and Marlin have four daughters. You will meet Karen, Melissa, and Amy in this post. Their youngest daughter Chelsey was in school.

1a (16)

I thought you would enjoy seeing these turkeys that Amy made. I took a variety of angles so you can make your own if you want.

1a (17)

She found the recipe in a Taste of Home magazine/cookbook.

Melissa (Marlin and Nancy’s second daughter) preparing a quilt top.

1a (22)

After learning more about what happens on quilt receiving day, I headed home.

1a (22a)

It was a beautiful day, so I spent a bit of time visiting their chickens.

1a (25)

1a (27)

1a (28)

I think they were hoping I had food for them.

2 (1)

I went home and spent the rest of the day in my office – putting the finishing touches to our fourth quarter newsletter, as well as setting up another staff persons newsletter.

2 (2)

Toward evening Nancy called and laughingly told me that she doesn’t know how many times during the day they said, “Alright Doris Jean, enough with the blessings!”

It seems they received more quilts, quilt tops, and quilted crafts than in any previous time!

~~~
Don’t you wonder how that happens? Would it have been different if I had not prayed. Did blessing their day change anything?
I don’t know, but I do know that if I had not listened to the inner voice that told me to turn around and tell them I prayed a blessing on their day, Nancy, her girls, and I would have missed out on something delightful that God was doing.
~~~

If any of the locals are interested in the auction, it is held at Liberty Fire Hall, 339 East Main Street, New Holland, PA.

This one will be held on Tuesday, November 15 – beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Sam’s Orchard

After church at Line Lexington we went to Sam’s house, because he wanted Cerwin to check the propane heater in his greenhouse.

1

From what I could tell, the orchard was finished bearing fruit for this season.

1b (1)

As I searched through bushes and trees, about all I found were seed pods and berries – probably also filled with seeds.

1b (2)

1c (1)

Can you tell what fruit this gnarled trunk produces?

1c (2)

It is the main trunk to a grape vine.

2 (1)

I’m not sure what these are called (Sam did say the name), but they sure are pretty.

2 (2)

2 (5)

The fire bush is bright red.

2 (9)

Inside the green house there is a small orange bush that Sam said is purely decorative.

2 (10)

There are some brand new buds, so there will soon be more little oranges.

2 (11)

These fuchsia were also in the greenhouse.

2 (12)

2 (13)

2 (17)

Outside I found a few of these pretty purple flowers close to the ground.

2 (18)

These are seed pods on a large asparagus plant that was growing at an unusual spot in the yard. Sam said the birds planted it.

2 (20)

More pretty flowers

2a (1)

I was surprised to find several hanging strawberry plants that were still blooming and producing strawberries.

2a (1a)

They are in a protected area of the orchard, and continue to produce a few strawberries a week.

2a (2)

I always enjoy walking through Sam’s orchard and garden whether it is spring, summer, fall or winter.

~~~
Later we enjoyed lunch at Henning’s Market with Sam and Alice.
Pumpkins
In a variety of shapes and forms
1 (1)
After people left the mission’s display room at Line Lexington Church, I noticed several pumpkins that had obviously been finger painted by young children of the church.
1 (2)
They were displayed in front of a large fireplace.
1 (3)
1 (4)
1 (5)
Above them – on the fireplace mantle – were a few more pumpkin decorations.
1 (6)
1 (7)
1 (8)
I just thought that you would enjoy these creative pumpkins.
