Birds on Our Patio

| Birds

I think this is the first time a wren raised babies in the bird house on our patio. I think this Common Grackle got in someone’s bleach. 🙂 I never tire of seeing unusual or common birds at our feeders, on the ground, or in their nests.

Healthy Yard & Indigo Bunting

| Birds, Yard

June 3 & 4 We appreciate that Jere keeps our yard healthy each year – with fertilizer and weed killer. I captured this picture from a living room window while he was refilling the tank and talking to Cerwin. It was a day earlier when I was pleased to see a male Indigo Bunting on […]

May 21 to June 3 This beautiful Ring-necked Pheasant was in a neighboring field when we returned to our house following Jared and Chelsey’s wedding. The next morning – on the way to Sunday school – there was a Trumpeter Swan in the field across from us. I am not sure that I ever saw one […]

Birds & Blossoms of May 20

It was a beautiful day in our yard. I think this robin must have “heard” a worm on our patio, because it was here for quite awhile. Then a mockingbird came by. Mr. Cardinal was looking for sunflower seeds. Our lilac bush has gotten quite large – and smells delightful. Lilacs and early summer seem to […]

Baltimore Oriole

Monday Morning, May 16 I was surprised to see a Baltimore Oriole at one of our humming bird feeders. I rarely see them in our woods. The last time I saw one was in 2002, and before that it was 1997. (I date my bird book when it is one I rarely see.) He also […]

Birds of May

| Birds

One of my favorite things about the arrival of May is: I see birds that aren’t usually at our feeders. Remember this picture of a male rose-breasted Grosbeak from several days ago? This is his mate – the female. She is pretty in her own way, but not as brilliant as the male. This is another […]

Rose-breasted Grosbeak & Northern Mockingbird

Thursday, May 28 I was pleased when I looked outside the other day and saw a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak. We only see them during the spring and summer months – and not real often. He was a treasure to my eyes. After the grosbeak flew away – and I was still birdwatching – this mockingbird came […]

Cerwin’s 75th Birthday Party

| Birds, Family

Saturday Evening, April 23 I was pleased that Jere and Kristen were able to host this party – and they seemed to have a lot of fun decorating their barn and preparing a fabulous meal. They used a hunting theme. Snack mix for the girls… …and for the boys I ordered the cake without knowing their […]

Abundant

| Birds

I am going to use the word “abundant” to describe the European Starling. We rarely think of the starling as a beautiful bird, but I rather like their pretty speckled, winter coat of feathers. First brought to North America by Shakespeare enthusiasts in the nineteenth century, European Starlings are now among the continent’s most numerous […]

Blue Jay Kind Of Day

Wednesday, January 20 The day started with a beautiful sunrise. For some reason, I saw a lot of blue jays. They are known for their intelligence and complex social systems with tight family bonds. Their fondness for acorns is credited with helping spread oak trees . Blue Jays are smaller than crows, larger than robins. Genders […]

Simplicity

| Birds

I love to watch birds and humans Both teach me lots of lessons Birds teach me the beauty of simplicity. It’s rare to find people who truly understand the beauty of simplicity because our minds create so much drama. Birds are sometimes selfish – chasing away other birds who get too close. People do that […]

A Good Day to Be Feeding Birds

| Birds, Winter

The European Starlings – and many other birds – seem to appreciate that I am keeping black oil sunflower seeds on top of the snow today. I put a tray of seeds on top of a bush just outside a kitchen window – and keep refilling it.

A Bevy of Doves & Evening Fog

Tuesday, December 22 I noticed these mourning doves just before lunch. Did you know that a group of doves is called a bevy? Or, according to Wild Birds Unlimited: A group of doves has many collective nouns, including a “bevy”, “cote”, “dole”, “dule”, and “flight” of doves. An interesting fact about the Mourning Dove is […]

A short lesson on the tufted titmouse and dark-eyed junco who frequent our feeders this time of year. I see these small gray birds quite often and love watching them. My Stokes Field Guide to Birds – Eastern Region – tells me that they are about 5″ in length. They eat insects, seeds, and berries – and I can […]

Monday’s Birds

Monday, November 23 It was a busy morning, but when I looked outside our kitchen window at 9:30, and the lighting was right, I stopped to take a few pictures of this finch couple. They are the most common of birds at our feeders, but I still find them so pretty and interesting. Then, just as I […]

Ringnecks in Our Yard

There are at least three ringneck pheasants in our yard each morning, often only one at a time, but sometimes I see three on the edge of the cornfield. It is fun watching them. A pheasant and a crow searching for breakfast. Then a squirrel joined him. Pheasants remind me of royalty because of their […]

Enjoying Hummingbirds

I may have mentioned it before, but I am enjoying the hummingbirds this summer. Since I put out three feeders, I see them every day – many times a day. In previous years – when I had only one feeder – I rarely saw hummingbirds. They make me smile.

Lydia ~ Tea ~ Sunset Extraordinaire

Tuesday, June 23 Our mint tea was getting tall, so I asked our granddaughter Lydia (who was visiting from Maine) if she was interested in pulling the leaves so I could freeze them – instead of letting it go to seed. Shortly after she began working on the tea, I noticed a bird splashing in the birdbath, and thinking it was bathing, […]

Bathing Cardinal & Birthday Supper

Wednesday, April 22 One of the good things about being home again is watching my birds. This cardinal was enjoying a bath. It must have been rain water, because I hadn’t cleaned or filled the bird bath yet. His lady was on the ground searching for seeds. Cerwin’s birthday supper at RD’s with Deb, Roy, […]

My husband, Cerwin, and I have four children, seventeen grandchildren (2 are in Heaven), and 19 great grandchildren. Cerwin spent 40 years as a truck driver for Ferrellgas. We are both retired from serving with Transport For Christ - a ministry to truck drivers - and love our life in rural Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
