Sportsman’s Dinner & Expo

Saturday Evening, January 31 at Grace Point Church, Ephrata

We always look forward to this evening of information about hunting and wild animal conservation. We have learned a variety of worthwhile information during the many years that we have been attending.

The program opened with interesting information about a South African hunt.

This year our son Jeff brought his grandson (our great grandson) Bennett along.

Bennett was especially interested in the door prize table for children. He hoped to get these pliers. Sadly, they were gone by the time his ticket number was called. That was rather heart-breaking for him.

The 5:00 dinner is always a highlight and delicious part of the evening. I could barely get Bennett to stop eating coleslaw for this picture. 🙂 I was surprised at how much he likes coleslaw.

In addition to the coleslaw (back left) there was meatloaf, pulled pork, mashed potatoes, green beans. and baked beans. They make the best baked beans and smoked pulled pork.

Following supper there were the first kill awards for the children who harvested their first wild animal in 2025.

This has rarely happened for us that each one in our car received a door prize. Some years none of our ticket numbers were called. This year Jeff received a hunting book, Cerwin won a spotlight, I received a tape measure, and Bennett got a headlight. Cerwin and I gave our prizes to Bennett, which helped his disappointment at not receiving the pliers. I think he was quite happy with all his “loot” by the time he got home. His mom, Diana, said he was so excited about everything.

The speaker for the evening was Millard Yoder who showed a great video about Pennsylvania elk.

It was quite interesting to watch bull elk fighting during mating season. We also saw how a baby elk is tagged so the game commission can follow it and learn more about the elk in Pennsylvania.

We have gone to Benezette, PA, to see elk during the mating season as that is when the elk are in fields, yards and along the road. This was much better because we could sit in comfortable seats and watch them on a large screen – and up close.
