Field Corn

The other day I took a walk down our road to see what is happening in the corn fields that line the road.

The tassels waved beautifully as a slight breeze moved them.

The tassels are responsible for the male part of pollen production.

Pollination from the tassels is received by the silk (mostly by wind). This will then produce corn kernels.

There is still some young silk on the corn stalks, which means the kernels are still forming.

On the stalks where the silk is old and dry, the kernels are fairly mature.

This type of corn is called field corn and will feed the cattle on several local farms – or wherever it is shipped.
