The ordinary and often pesky starlings looked rather pretty the other day in the late morning sunshine.

They were introduced to New York City in1890 – from Europe. Since then, they have spread across North America.

They usually come to our feeders in groups and are noisy and scrappy.

I personally think they look rather pretty in their speckled winter feathers.

If you ever see a large flock of starlings – often in the evening or morning – you will hear them. Their flocks can be as large as several thousand. A large flock is called a “murmuration” because of the sound they make.

Even when at our feeders, they don’t seem to stay in one place very long.

Though they are rather fun to watch, I am glad when they leave so the small birds will return.
