Secret Sisters Luncheon at White Oak Church

I have never been involved in this activity at church because of our busy lives with Transport For Christ. I no longer have that excuse since we retired. Because we are on the Spiritual Enrichment and Caring Committee at church for another three years (a committee who reaches out to others). I decided to sign up to have a secret sister – one who will bless me.

Each lady from church was invited to the meal this year (not just those with secret sisters), and because there was still extra space, any visiting ladies were also invited. I noticed that a few of them stayed as well.

Each lady chooses how and when she will reveal herself to her secret sister. I could have to wait a few months or even the full year to know who has chosen to bless me with prayer and in any other way she chooses.

The tables we beautifully set. One thing I noticed immediately – there were vases without flowers.

But there were lots of flowers at the one end of the fellowship hall. I supposed that mean we would be filling our own vases.

Our meal began with an elaborate salad table. There were also crackers, cheese, and a delicious punch at the end of the table – which I did not capture.

The fellowship hall was filled with ladies and girls.

Following the salad, we were served sandwiches (hot ham and cheese or chicken salad) and soup (cheeseburger or chicken and rice).

Desserts were a variety of things that ladies brought. I expect some of the ladies brought salad bar ingredients and the fruit salad as well. (Notice more empty vases on the windowsill.)

When we were finished eating, we learned about our empty vases and the flowers. Janessa was in charge of the day as the lead person on the committee. She picked up an empty vase and explained that this is what our life can look like without friends, but we as friends (or secret sisters) can help fill up another person’s life by adding flowers (or beauty). Then we were encouraged to pick up an empty vase or container and fill it up with flowers and greenery.

I chose what looked like a repurposed saltshaker and filled it with a variety of small flowers.

It was a delightful, refreshing afternoon.
