The Cornfields Surrounding Our House

It’s a beautiful breezy day here in northern Lancaster County. I went outside to get some pictures of the cornfield below our yard.

You will notice that the beautiful green corn has quickly changed to brown tones.

Because the farmer has allowed it to brown tells me that this will be picked for the corn instead of harvesting the entire stalk for silage. In this case the stalk will be used for bedding for the animals.

Across the road, the whole stalks were harvested the other week for silage. The entire field has already been covered with manure in preparation for the next crop. Probably a winter grass or wheat.

Most of that field was harvested at night.

That silage is already safely covered in the trenches at the farm – under the plastic and tires. The cattle will eat well this winter.
