Amish Meal at King Crest Farm, Lititz, PA
~~~
This “old gang” consists of couples who ran around together in the late 50s and early 60s – especially the guys. Some of us also double or triple dated.
We began getting together as The Old Gang sometime in the late 60s after most were married and had small children – just to stay in touch because our lives had gone in a variety of directions. In those days we often had picnics at a local park so there was something for the children to do.
Each year two couples are in charge of choosing something to do – usually in the fall. There is a list and rotation of couples that Marty Hershey keeps. I think she is also the one who began this get-together in the 60s. She has probably already given two couples the responsibility for 2024.
Prayer before the meal.
This year we enjoyed an Amish meal at King Crest Farm. The Amish couple who lives on this farm built this building for their daughter’s wedding. After that they moved these meals from their house to this building on their farm.
The Amish lady giving instructions to our table. She had an adult daughter helping her.
When Julie Graybill saw me with my camera, she called me to where she was sitting, so I could get a picture of the dog who enjoyed getting food from the guests.
By this picture, it looks like there were 28 people who attended this year.
The kitchen is to the left between the glass doors. There was also a small gift shop along that wall.
Our meal: chicken leg or thigh, meat loaf, buttered mashed potatoes and noodles, peas, and corn. There was also chowchow and dinner rolls – with a choice of butter, jelly and a peanut butter/marshmallow mix. Dessert consisted apple pie, warm shoefly pie, chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream. Delicious!
We visited until about 8 pm, honoring their closing time on this evening because they were serving a noon meal the next day. She apologized a bit for the time limit and said they rarely serve Saturday meals.
It was an incredibly nice evening.
Wonderful that so many of you still get together after all this time!
Each year we have a few who cannot come due to health, some of the spouses have died and there are a few wheelchairs and walkers.
