This is one of our favorite restaurants when we are looking for atmosphere – and have time for the two-hour drive. It is located on the C & D Canal in Chesapeake City, Maryland.
Because Roy and Deb live only one hour away from the restaurant and took us there for the first time several years ago, we asked if we could take them to Schaefers for her 2024 birthday on the actual date of our anniversary. They loved the idea. This is one of the perks of having a retired son-in-law – you can go out for dinner in the middle of the afternoon. π Our reservation was for 4 pm.
When I say atmosphere, I mean atmosphere! Because is along the canal, we can watch ships, yachts and boats going by. There isn’t as much boat traffic in the middle of the week as on weekends.
It is especially fun to watch a boat’s owner come to the restaurant dock and stop by for a meal.
It looks like Cerwin and Roy are studying something serious.
Cheesesteak appetizers. Cerwin said he will get these for his entree sometime. I think this was Deb’s appetizer. She shared with Cerwin.
Roy’s Shrimp Cocktail appetizer. There were six. He shared two with me. π
A house salad came with my lobster tail entree. I didn’t want a baked potato (which also came with my meal) and asked if they could embellish my salad with fruit in place of a baked potato. Our waiter said, “Sure.”
Since it was the actual day or our 60th Wedding anniversary, I splurged and got lobster tail.
Deb’s crab and steak entree.
We asked the waiter if he would take a picture of the four of us. He kindly agreed and took one toward the water to show our location next to the canal. The tables right next to the canal were too sunny, so no one was sitting there.
He took another (better one) with his back to the water.
I didn’t know what it meant when the dessert menu said Smith Island coconut cake or Smith Island almond/nut cake. Now we know! Oh, my, it is delicious. Smith Island Bakery is about two hours away from the restaurant.

Then, Roy turned the tables on us and paid the bill because it was our anniversary. We planned to pay the bill for Deb’s birthday.
Now we have to go back again. Nancy (my sister) and Marlin want to go some time and Roy and Deb would like to go along when we take them – so there are plans to go back in another week. This time Roy promised that he will let us pay for their meal for Deb’s birthday. π
You made me hungery! Our 60th will be next April 23. Congrats on yours!
It was fun to look at these pictures and remember the food and delightful weather.
What a wonderful son-in-love! You are blessed indeed. π And now you can look forward to another lovely meal with him and Deb (and your sister and brother-in-love as well).
I agree!
What a fun place to celebrate birthdays!
