Diane wanted to take advantage of boneless chicken thighs which were on sale at Dutch-Way Farm Market, Schaefferstown and asked if we wanted to go along then drive through Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area on the way home to see the Snow Geese.

We weren’t busy and enjoy grocery shopping and seeing Snow Geese.

It was the middle of the day, so we knew we wouldn’t see as many as can be seen earlier or later in the day, but according to their website, we probably saw about 3,000.

During the day the geese go out to neighboring fields to forage for food, then come back to Middle Creek to roost for the night.

They figure the peak was about 79,000 this year which is a bit low. That was at the end of January.

When we were there the morning and evening peak reached about 27,000. The peak at the end of February is about 18,000 because they are quickly migrating to their summer nesting grounds in Canada, Alaska, Russia and Greenland.

The geese make it look like there was snow on the ground.

We didn’t take time to walk out to the areas where we could have had a closer view. It was a cold, windy day.

A few days ago I saw several hundred close to the road in our area, but I didn’t have my camera in the car. 🙁
