Hairy Woodpeckers are not a rare visitor – we see them on occasion – while we see Downys almost every day.

The Hairy is almost identical to the Downy except it is larger and has a longer beak.

When you see one, you know it is not a Downy because of the size.

Fun facts about Hairy Woodpeckers: Hairy woodpeckers can tap on wood at a speed of 100 taps in one minute.

They help control populations of bark beetles, wood-boring beetles and moths.
